Class Action Lawsuits - Consumer

Has anyone ever been involved in one of these? I got contacted almost a year ago from a law firm about wanting me to be a part of a class action lawsuit against the vehicle manufacturer of one of my vehicles due to their windshields not being very sturdy and easily chipping and cracking. I had a rock chip prior to them contacting me that I had paid for out of pocket. They wanted a ton of information, but I gave it to them back then. I just got a call from one of their attorneys saying that they're close to settling and that they want me to grant them settlement authority. They estimate that baseline relief would be $1,500. I think I paid $100 to fix the rock chip, so I'm cool with that, but not sure if I'd be signing anything else away by giving them authority. I know that in these things, the attorneys make out like bandits usually and then the class action members get the scraps.

Not legal advice, but there is usually a deadline in the case to opt out from the class, and you may have already missed that.

Anyway, I always sign up for these when I can because it’s “free” money, and you’ll probably never find an attorney who will take your individual case.

Yes taxable. 1099-Misc

Probably Colombian men.

They do have a good commercial.
 
In the last year ive gotten >1000 from theses suits by doing nothing.

You're correct on the last statement. I haven't been someone who's worked with a law firm (just gotten the postcards in the mail after someone else did), but settlement authority means the law firm gets to decide what level payout to accept, and you won't be able to separately sue the company. If you're not planning on taking other action, not really any reason not to sign over something like this.

if 1500 per person is the total judgment, then about 300-400 would be what you might typically pocket in a normal class action suit.

Why did you pay for the rock chip repair out of your pocket? If you have comp/coll coverage on your vehicle, insurance companies will waive your deductible for repairable rock chips with no expense to you. Also doesn't count against you as a claim.
 
Experian data breach; I signed up for it circa 2020 & ended up getting a decent sized debit card in the mail. I wanna say it was like $740 or something close to that.

State Farm didn't and said windshield repair wasn't covered in their comprehensive policy.

I know here in TN - and I’m not joking - 1 in 5 vehicles has a noticeable crack in their windshield.
 
I just signed on for one against Walmart for weighed produce and bagged citrus 😂 . Don’t have the slightest clue what the allegations even are, but why the hell not.
