Huskers add a women's flag football team

If any burly lesbians thought they were leaving the state, they've got another thing coming
whose line is it anyway laughing GIF

This will be one way to achieve my idea of getting around the 105.

My pitch was to have intramural fully padded football that was run by a hired coach that would run systems that the real team is running so when injuries occur you can backfill the 105

Looks like we are going the flag route and having our 106-150 identify as women…smart.

Maybe, but football has been around for longer than Title 9, wasn't that the 70s?

I actually thought that this rev-share and Title9 would lead to places cutting sports, but here we are adding a female flag-football team.

Weird times.
Yeah. This has Turd Alberts written all over it. Fuckin’ brilliant. A forward-thinking matchmaking strategy for the recruiting class of fuckin’ 2046.

The way title 9 got implemented is dumb but they basically have to have equitable scholarship numbers which means the number of scholarships has to match the proportion of male and female students.

The gender difference in enrollment is now greater than it was when title 9 was signed it has just flipped to female enrollment being way higher than male.

Women now make up 58-60% of undergraduate enrollment now so technically we would need 6 women’s scholarships for every 4 men’s.

Ahhh, appreciate the education. I thought scholarship distribution, male v female, was calculated on the number of men receiving full scholarships where the women had to receive equal to or a tad bit greater (your 6 v 4 number aligns)...

Just going off of old numbers (scholarship allotment):
85 FB
13 MBB
12.6 CC/T&F
11.7 BS
9.9 WR
6.3 MGYM
4.5 Golf
4.5 MTE
147.5 total

147.5 / 4 * 6 = 221.25 women's scholarships for Title IX.

If we had to add an entire new womens team because enrollment percentages started widening, that's ridiculous.

If he had to add a women's team because we are adding scholarships to some men's sport, then maybe I can make sense of this.

Remember my baseball update in the Bomb Shelter? Dannen took away the little revenue share baseball had, and put it to scholarships.

Now we know why the piece of shit weasel did what he did. Fucking snake prick.

I would have much rather added women’s wrestling instead

But it’s still very low cost if TIX. was an issue

Guys its women's flag football, it will probably cost around $14 to run. I dont think Nebraska is going to be missing out on any Tackles because of it.

$22,000* per player for scholarships x minimum 30 on the roster = $660,000. Head coach, plus an assistant(s)? Trainer, unless pulled from another sport as a dual? Travel. Officials.

Ya, this is wasting, at bare minimum, $1M per year. Purely a guess, this will be close to $1.5M/year at minimum. We have other sports that would love the added resources to their budgets, facilities, etc.

* $22K for simple math

Jan 2026 - Dec 2026 = 1 year
Jan 2027 - Dec 2027 = 1 year
Jan 2028 - ??? 2028 = some period of time (OP doesnt say "Spring" it says "beginning in 2028") so I rounded up to 3.

Therefore, Mr. Bean = My "3 years" time.

Pony Boy was kind enough to clarify Spring and the facts that they actually DO need a coach and staff etc.

EDIT & PS - the chili dog emoji reaction option is my favorite and fuckin' brilliant thanks for that!

Scholarship math is fake, it doesn't cost the athletic department $22,000 to give a scholarship.

The "cost" still gets allocated to the school based on the students tuition, housing, etc. That's the actual cost to the athletic department funds.

I don't know what the actual number is but I'd bet Pony is pretty damn close. Certainly close enough for the point he's making.

You may want to let Dannen, and his predecessors, know so they take it out of the yearly budget...

I want to talk about the Nebraska model for a second. I would tell you now, having been here about 18 months, the number one job that I have, all of you think it’s winning. And when I say I, I mean I, my team, our department. It’s winning games. Now, faculty will tell you its graduation and grade point averages, and the CFO will tell you its balance in the budget. But, the number one priority is protecting the financial model that I walked into that had been developed over the years. A financial model that’s possible because of those attendance numbers I talked about earlier. That’s why the financial model is viable here. And that financial model is this. We don’t take any student fees, we don’t take any institutional subsidies. We don’t take any state dollars. We pay full rack rate for scholarships. There’s no out of state differential wavers. And, we pay the last two years, and this year again, $5 million back to the university as a subsidy.

Not only does the athletic department pay for the scholarships, they also donate millions directly to UNL. Most of the time, it's to help fund non-athletic scholarships and in some years, they also donate on top of that to the Chancellor to off-set costs. That's a lot of scratch each year.

Here's one for people; freshmen living in dorms (must if not 19 years old, unless given a waiver like Raiola had) have to pay for the meal plan. Yes, they get full access to the training table as part of their scholarship (regardless if they're full ride, partial or walk-ons) but they are required to pay for the meal plan whether they use it or not. Dumbest fucking thing ever. Full scholarship athletes don't pay for it though, as that expense is built in to their "full ride" which pays for it that way.

How much does the baseball team generate from tickets sales, concessions, gear and how much are their op expenses? I would think they would turn a decent profit and allow for more investment.
