Side note - how well coached is UGA that the kid knew to lay down to recover the kick so time wouldn’t come off and keep the 1 second on the clock? Can you even imagine a NU team being that well coached?

Isn’t the ball just dead anyway if recovered by the kicking team? Kicking team can’t advance it so I don’t think any time ticks off clock unless an Ole Miss player touches it first.

Yeah, I’m not convinced that is why he was down. It’s not a ball that can be advanced on recovery, probably just ensuring recovery vice understanding that obscure rule that I would guess no one on the coaching staff knew.

Nope, it can’t be advanced by the kicking team but time comes off unless the player is down when they recover it in which case the clock doesn’t start

I've heard that a lot of times those players do have small clear mouthguards in their mouths (hard to see) plus the additional one dangling off their facemasks. Some do this as a backup in case they lose their main one, others because they think it looks cool

I’m not a current football player, so follow up: is losing one’s mouthpiece a growing concern? If I understand you right they would have three - small one in mouth and two hanging from face mask.
