With a 5-star qb starting his second season, wins in the transfer portal at WR, an experienced OL, and an offensive savant at OC, we scored 20 points, and only because of a deep turnover.

I just can’t believe that is meeting anyone’s expectations.

Maybe if this looked like an anomaly, no big deal. But we have not been scoring points repeatedly, even with Holgorsen

Can it not meet my expectations while also not making me want to chop my dick off in rage?

Their strategy was to not let Raiola beat them. I believe they played 2 and even 3 high safety for a big chunk of the game (the bourbon started hitting in the third quarter so correct me if I'm wrong).

I think our issue, and what we've been concerned about, was that we didn't destroy them with our run game because we really only have EJ.

What Cincy did was the equivalent of Wisconsin basketball, where they basically played in a way to make the game so ugly, that you need to be almost perfect and not turn the ball over to win.

Imagine had we lost the game...lol.

How ugly was the Cockeye State v Kansas State game last week? Did we look better or worse than those two (at the time) ranked teams?
Exactly. That was an ugly game for both teams. A ton of penalties and sloppy play. Typically those things can be cleaned up. But there’s been years when we played like that all year.

I never like a decent opponent in the first game. As we’ve seen in the past, a first game loss can spiral. We got a win that hopefully builds confidence.

Speaking of ranked teams, Boise State did not look the part either. In one of the polls here, I picked a 7-5 season. Part of it was due to battered fan syndrome and part was a wait and see.

Lots to clean up. But a lot of positives from last night too

Agreed, plenty to clean up. Just can't forget it was game one against a P4 team. So many of the problems we've had in the past, were NOT there.

I believe we looked better than both K-State or I-State from last week.

Cincinnati looked better than last's weeks KSU and ISU too.

...and both were ranked teams...allegedly better than Nebraska (and Cinci) so...

I think you all need to stop focusing on "how good" Cincinnati is or will be. Its really irrelevant, especially going into week 2.

They were exactly what I thought they would be. I assumed they would come up with a few big plays and score 17 to 20 points.

Nebraska dominated that game from a TOP, total plays, first downs, and 3rd down conversion standpoint. But they made dumb mistakes which halted them from breaking the game open.

- Haarberg missed 3 blocks in the backfield that cost them from extending drives.

-Pritchett made a bonehead false start.

- Hunter, Key, and Mills all made some new player mistakes on routes.

Those little things potentially change a 20-17 game into a 30-17 game. Thankfully, Nebraska forced two turnovers and played very good special teams.

Honestly, if it was 2021, Nebraska loses that game 17-13 with the exact same stat line.

I don't know if Haarberg can inmprove his blocking. Carter Nelson was also not good as a blocker. If he makes a block on a Barney run, Jacory picks up 15 yards easily.

But If you had faith in Holgersen before the season, then you should have faith in him that he can get it fixed.

What I don't understand is the "neutral" or "positive" comments from people who predicted we'd win 42-13 like two days ago

How is that not irrational? It reads like pure cope
If you want to spin it the other way, the Sandy Vagina crew wouldn’t shut up before the game about how weak we were at DL and RB. Now they’re using that as a reason to be more negative. Shouldn’t they be neutral?

Personally, I knew that RB and DL were going to be struggles for us, but there were quite a few areas where we’ve obviously made huge strides. I’m neutral at this point.

Anyone who predicted a 42-13 win in a 6.5 spread was delusional anyway. Reality played out, not Kool-aid drinking.

I think the silliest error in judgment, and I was guilty of this too, was the people who thought this outcome was going to go over the total.

In 2024, Nebraska and Cincinnati were both top 20 nationally in time of possession. We are all morons for failing to realize this game was going to be low scoring.

I think the optimistic way to look at this season, is making this season a springboard into 2026. That doesn’t mean this season isn’t incredibly important, but if we get to 8-9 wins we should have tangible momentum going into the next offseason, and we will be able to plug holes on the roster with even higher caliber transfers. Guys will want to come play here, and donors will pony up.

Remember, this is the youngest team in the big ten, just a fact. Get them some extremely valuable experience this season (especiallly on defense) and you might be cooking with gas come 2026. Now , if we go 6-6 it still wouldn’t be good enough, but I’m not sure if it can be overstated how important it is for the program to have momentum going into next year because the window of opportunity will be there.
