Glad he is just 5. Doesn't understand what is going on- and we don't fight in front of him.

If you can agree on 50/50 custody and there isn't much financial disparity use a mediator. Much cheaper and less time consuming for both of you.

Does she have an attorney? If not, she probably will. Once she does, you'll need one too. Trying to do it amicably with 50/50 splits and no attornies is better, but maybe not realistic. Good luck, brother.

Do it fast as possible before she gets “advice” from her friends and family about how much she “deserves” from the relationship. I just signed all my paperwork on my second divorce last week. Stay calm. Don’t lose your shit, cuz that can turn the whole thing into a shit show! Act like you're trying to sell something on Facebook that you know is definitely a piece of shit, but you just need it out of your garage. Be nice. Celebrate later, and move on. My parents split when I was 9. Really ugly divorce. Don't mean to turn this into a counseling session but I have "mom issues" because of it, because of decisions she made at the time and I was around it all. Excluding only a couple hypothetical marital mistakes that couldn't be forgiven, I'll fight everyday for my marriage even on mine and wife's worst days. No way shape or form would I want my daughter to ever go through that.

I remember going through the divorce of my 1st marriage (was young and stupid and ignored all of the warning signs). There was a Cajun gal that worked for me in AP. She came into my office one day and said, "Boss, just so you know, if you want to take care of your problem and not have to go through a divorce, I know a guy that can do that for you for around $10k." I just laughed about it and told her thanks, but I was good. After going through the divorce (got a little ugly and cost me a fair amount of money), I sometimes wonder if I made the right choice... 🙂
