He's going to have to take a few more chances on the intermediate and deep throws. At some point he needs to trust his WRs to make plays and push the ball down the field.

He's already elite at dropping balls into zone coverage behind the first level and in front of the second level. Very few college QBs do that as well as Dylan does.

He also throws a very catchable ball, but he needs to show off his arm strength more and fit it into some of those tight windows. Holgerson mentioned this during fall camp, so it's something that's being worked on

Need to bring Tommy Armstrong in to consult specifically on yeeting it as you possibly can down the field

I think he overthought some situations and missed some open receivers game 1 which is something that was an issue last season. Also got extremely lucky on a couple plays that would’ve changed the game had they gone the other way.

I think once we start pushing the ball downfield more we’ll see his complete growth since last season.

Raiola's career yards-per-attempt: 6.8
Casey Thompson (while at NU): 8.8
Adrian Martinez (while at NU): 8.0
Tommy Armstrong: 7.6
Taylor Martinez: 7.5
Joe Ganz: 8.8
Zac Taylor (while at NU): 7.1

Doing some checking, looks like other than Raiola, Heinrich Haarburg, Jeff Sims, Ron Kellogg, Cody Green, and Joe Dailey are the only guys in the last 30 years who started more than a couple games for us who had a sub-7.0 career (to date) ypa. Note that three of those six are Rhule QBs...

Good question, there is hope, but I just don't think he is a very good athlete, he is slow(nobody is fooled on a zone read or RPO), and I don't think his arm strength is better than average. He does have a nice touch on a ball when he needs to, which is his strength. He needs to drop the Mahomes crap and be his own man. He is making an ass of himself with it and just asking to get abused by the media and opposing fans. It is flat creepy. I just wish he would show more energy; the rest of the offense seems to play a lot like his body language.

What Mahomes crap does he need to drop?

FIRST OF ALL this is not a shit talking thread, it's a hopeful prediction thread. There is no doubt that Dylan Raiola has INCREDIBLE physical tools to become a "generational QB", he's clearly very smart and he has a great attitude, he embraces being the face of the program, hell yeah. My question however, is when might we see Raiola start to reach his extremely high ceiling on the field?

I'm looking forward to finding out what truly sets him apart and makes him a special QB, aside from making the easy passes look easy and taking what the defense gives him (which, I will note, is a very welcome quality at NU haha). Right now we're 14 games into his career as a starting QB, he’s a freak athlete with incredible skills and arguably our top recruit in like 30 years, I don't think I'm alone in wondering when we will see more levels to his already impressive game.

Some interesting stats:

Raiola's career yards-per-attempt: 6.8
Casey Thompson (while at NU): 8.8
Adrian Martinez (while at NU): 8.0
Tommy Armstrong: 7.6
Taylor Martinez: 7.5
Joe Ganz: 8.8
Zac Taylor (while at NU): 7.1

Raiola number of 300 yard passing games: 0
Thompson (while at NU): 3
Adrian Martinez (while at NU): 4
Tommy Armstrong: 6
Taylor Martinez: 4
Joe Ganz: 8
Zac Taylor (while at NU): 3

Of course we're running different offenses over the years and yada yada yada, but it's pretty much universally agreed that Raiola has the talent and pedigree that none of those other recent QBs had, and this year I think he should have the receiving talent to rival what those guys had around them. When do you foresee him making a noticeable "leap" into the type of star who can carry an offense on his shoulders and scare the shit out of other teams? What do you think he needs to improve upon to get there?

I guess it depends your definition of “it”… I mean 78% completion percentage with a couple touchdowns and zero interceptions isn’t exactly dog s*it. Granted, we need to see him against better competition, but that’s out of his control to this point. Dude can only play the games in front of him, and he couldn’t have done a hell of a lot better in the last one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t really agree with the dropping the Mahomes antics mostly because I’ve never been bothered by it. But I do agree with the less of an athlete take. Mahomes doesn’t run much either but is still a threat to run that the defense has to respect, which just comes down to athleticism/speed.

To be fair to Dylan, there were a couple passes early in the game that our receivers just flat out dropped along the sidelines. One to Hunter that looked like he coulda brought in and one to Barney just before the play Dylan fumbled. You make those catches you sustain those early drives.

I'm tired of bringing dickheat to threads. This whole thread is poorly concocted.

Nebraska Football's record vs power conference opponents during 300 yard passing games is like a Scott Frost's head coaching record when trailing by 7 or less in the 2nd half of a Big Ten game.
