What you need to know from Week 1 of spring transfer portal window

We’re nearing the halfway point of the spring transfer portal window, which opened April 15 and runs through April 30.
The window is the last chance for undergraduate players to enter the transfer portal in advance of the 2023 season.
Here’s what you need to know through the first week of the window being open:

Player quality

Heading into the spring portal window, several Power Five personnel figures predicted to On3 that the spring window portal entries would consist largely of back-end of the roster Power Five players that, in some cases, teams may be looking to clear out in order to get under the limit of 85 scholarships per roster.
So far, they’ve been right.
For example, 11 players from national runner-up TCU had already entered the transfer portal through Thursday night. Aside from wide receiver and former top recruit Jordan Hudson, who had 14 catches last season, the other 10 players made little impact last year and combined to make a grand total of one start.
Unlike the winter window, when a number of established starters, all-conference selections and former top recruits went into the portal, there have been few of those types of players to go into the portal through the first six days of the spring window.
Some of the names that have come up most among personnel staffers as the top portal entries thus far: Georgia defensive lineman and former top-45 recruit Bear Alexander, who’s set to visit USC this weekend, Wyoming offensive guard Emmanuel Pregnon, Hudson, who appears likely to land at SMU, and San Diego State two-time first-team All-Mountain West safety Patrick McMorris, who committed to California.

Total number of entries

As of the end of the day Thursday, there had been 315 FBS scholarship portal entries since the portal opened on Saturday.
The breakdown of portal entries by day:
Saturday — 90
Sunday — 10
Monday — 92
Tuesday — 37
Wednesday — 41
Thursday — 45

Biggest attrition by team

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Of the teams with the most portal entries so far, many are programs with new coaching staffs, including Colorado with Deion Sanders, Arizona State with Kenny Dillingham, South Florida with Alex Golesh and Liberty with Jamey Chadwell.
Here are the teams with the most scholarship portal entries since the spring window opened:
Colorado — 13
TCU — 11
Arizona State — 10
South Florida — 10
Liberty — 8
Coastal Carolina — 8
Aside from Colorado, TCU and Arizona State, the only other Power Five teams with more than four portal entries thus far are Missouri (six), Cincinnati (five) and Mississippi State (five).

More to come

While there may be a dip in the number of total entries during the weekend, there will likely be another influx of portal entries early next week with nearly 40 FBS teams wrapping up spring practice with spring games this weekend.
Among the teams with spring games this weekend are Alabama, Colorado, LSU, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.
