Have the players been lifting in July? How would our strength coach not know that somebody was severely overweight?

I kind of wondered about this too. He must have received prior warnings is my guess, but I don’t know how it’s even possible to be so fat you can’t even practice after going through summer conditioning etc.

As far as the TE coaching debate goes, it's worth remembering that not so long ago, we didn't even HAVE a full-time dedicated tight ends coach. Riley just had a grad assistant (Tavita Thompson) working with them, plus the time that TEs spent with the OL and WR coaches. (Had he been retained he was going to promote Thompson to full time coach when the NCAA expanded the allowed coaching staff size.)

I've felt the same about the TE coaching position. Before the 10th assistant was allowed in 2018, a lot of schools seemed to have GAs handle that spot. Even under Rhule, Satterfield was originally going to coach the group along with OC duties. I liked Rhule's approach of bringing in someone who can do what's needed at the position, but if they're going to take that spot, they better bring something extra to the table.

Another case to look at is #2ndChoice at Wisconsin. He originally brought Gino Guidugli, his 2022 OC from Cincinnati with him to be the passing game coordinator and TEs coach. He left a couple months later to take the QB coach job at Notre Dame. In turn, #2ndChoice promoted offensive analyst Nate Letton, who was his 2022 TE coach, back into the TE role. Prior to 2022, Letton was a GA for Cincinnati while Mike Denbroke, #2ndChoice's long term OC, also handled TEs. Maybe the guy is something special and was earmarked to replace a set of coaches if any of them left, but #2ndChoice missed an opportunity to bring in a known recruiter or someone with strong Wisconsin or other regional ties.

Agree with this and Jank above.
Tight end seems to be looked at as an entry-level position where GA's and inexperienced coaches (for example, a former high school coach who has never coached in college) are assigned.
While I do agree that tight end can be one of the more complicated positions to play because all they are asked to do, it is also true that the TE coach is also "team-coaching" his players with other coaches a lot of the time.
