Upside Nickel: Gifford and Javin are making plays on D and ST. Exactly what we need from these two young dudes who are on a good development path. I remember when we almost didn't offer Gifford a schollie.

Upside OLB/DE: Nelson and Mathis broke out this week. We really need them to keep that level of play.

Downside OLB/DE: Caleb Tannor hasn't done much to help the D. I remember when we went all in recruiting him. He was a must get. He has played a ton but never really lived up to the potential or hype.

Upside OL: They sucked against NW. They were pretty bad against ND in the 1st half. They were a bit better in the 2nd half. That trend is positive even though it hurts to watch the growing pains.

Downside OL: I'm not sure we have the time to wait for them to gel and grow. Case in point is Teddy. He just isn't ready but we don't have the luxury to bring him along more slowly. Schedule is gonna get a lot tougher after Ga Southern.

Upside CB: Newsome and Hill are making plays and look solid.

Downside CB: Those two played basically every snap. That is unsustainable.

Upside S: Buford is growing. You can see it.

Downside S: See downside CB. Farmer and Buford need some rest and can't be in the whole game. Farmer also needs to learn tackling.

Did you guys see some other things to add?

Upside Grant
Downside Thompson played the whole game like he did the 2nd half at NW and not the first half.

🤷‍♂️I thought Tannor was all over the place and had a pretty damn good game
He's playing more off the LOS so I think he's less noticeable (not on the tv screen) in about half the plays. He had one hurry 4 tackles and 1 missed tackle in 41 snaps. He was targeted in coverage 4 times and gave up 3 completions but only 9 yards.

Sounds like a pretty good game.

Also as usual excessive celebration on every tackle/play.

Major Downside:

Nebraska's offensive line seemed completely caught off guard by North Dakota's blitz package. I have a really difficult time believing UND just Suddenly created a new pressure packages for Nebraska.

That means either Nebraska didn't prepare the offensive line and the QB for UNDs pressure, or they did prepare them and nobody learned a God Damned thing.

Its one thing to get beaten in a one on one situation. Its quite another and more worrisome when you literally don't know who the hell you're supposed to block.

Downside: Second Level Tackling, We made some of those low level backs look much better than they were. Worst tackling team I have seen
Downside: Safety, mainly Farmer. Not good at run support, tackling or coverage. Looks so slow out there

Upside: Special Teams, especially punting
Upside: Grant. Looks like a tough natural runner. Complete back. best we have had in a few years
Upside WR Room: Nice mix of athletes and experience. Some speed, quickness and size. If Manning plays to potential then we will have one of the best WR Rooms in the B1G

Upside: The skill players on offense are actually pretty good
Downside: The OL looks just looks like utter shit

Upside: Half the players on defense look solid, Edges, CBs, and Buford/Hausmann have a lot talent and a lot of growth ahead of them
Downside: The interior DL, the ILBs (in particular Reimer and Henrich), and Farmer are absolute shit

Upside... Omar Manning got some snaps and actually contributed. Anthony Grant is the popular upside pick but he is still underrated. He is a difference maker. Special teams are night and day better even with the missed FG.

Downside... Ty Robinson... Sigh... Overall tackling... Ugh, just brutal.

Upside, they showed some resolve and actual mental toughness. How easy would it have been to crumble? All the pressure you imposed by losing to NW, you are tied going into half against an FCS team, being boo'd going into half, probably tired from the sickness going around and Ireland trip, etc.... They didn't crumble and actually responded. Something we really haven't witnessed at Nebraska under Frost.

Knowing this - does anyone else just want to see us throw shit at the wall to see if it sticks? Would honestly LOVE to see them throw in a rotation with Anthony and Williams. Let's just find out whether they were meaningful portal additions or not. GA Southern sounds like a great time to experiment, much better than OU or B1G play.

Yeah I'd like to see HA and KW get some PT

None of the OGs have been looking good enough to not try playing Williams.

I was told he was in the dog house, but I don't think you can afford dog houses when you are 16-30 (or whatever his record is).

I also think Teddy is struggling with his knee still or at least mentally he doesn't trust it yet. If Whipple would stop going unbalanced with him that would be great. If you want to get cute do it with Benhart or Bring in an extra linemen at times. Stop fucking with Teddy's footwork when he is already struggling.

Yeah Bando was slow on a fan call and got Casey killed for it. That is the sort of shit you can't have from a guy who has been in the program as long as he has. That is all mental and communication. Something a 12th year senior should be better at.

I agree with this. Some guys stepped up to make plays and didn't allow us to lose. Finally. And to nobody's surprise they were mostly transfer/new guys.

Examples:

Anthony Grant basically the whole 2nd half.
Trey Palmer with a huge catch on 3rd and long.
Ochaun Mathis with pressures and a sack.

Upside - Grant

Downside - Team was not prepared to play against a middle of the road FCS Team. I could possibly understand if this was the first game of the year, but NU was coming off a loss in a game they should have won. You would think that the team would be chomping at the bit to go out and piss pound North Dakota. 🤷‍♂️

Upside: Grant, Allen, Palmer, Washington are all huge upgrades
Downside: slow, unathletic, soft OL with bad fundementals
Upside: Garrett Nelson. On one play last week he pushed NW star OT 8 yards back into their QB. He’s a beast.
Downside: When Nelson celebrates a tackle after a 5 yard gain on 2nd down. This kind of embodies the psyche of this team.
Upside: I like the route concepts that get Palmer with a safety, I think he can win that match up most of the time.
Downside: Tackling is abysmal. All levels of the defense are at fault here.
