He's been around and in charge for 2 football seasons, which just happen to be the 2 worst football seasons of the modern era. He failed to take decisive action last season, which he publicly admitted was not likely to be a successful path. As much as I hate the "close loss" stuff, it's pretty evident that the team is worse this year after his refusal to make a change. And the roster does not appear at all conducive to a rapid turnaround. The sellout streak is hanging by a thread.
I know he likes to present a calm "everything is fine" demeanor, but he has to be feeling the pressure, right? I don't think it's hyperbole to say we are in the midst of the biggest crisis this program has faced in the modern era. If he fully grasps the gravity of this hire, he has to be fucking nervous.
People love to say that no matter who the hire is, the fans will ultimately rally around him. I'm not sure that's the case. There is a real level of apathy that feels unprecedented. Making the hire that "doesn't win the press conference" is only going to exacerbate that. (Perhaps ironically, I think whoever the hire was would've gotten a lot more slack last year. Allowing the program to rot for another year just hurt things in so many different ways).
Maybe more importantly, the next guy has no room for error, because there are going to be fewer fans around if there is another search in 3-4 years.
Anyway, it feels like everything is riding on this hire in a way that is even bigger than Turd imagined when he decided to kick the can down the road. I really hope he has something good up his sleeve.
