1504 - Michelangelo’s towering marble statue of David was unveiled to the public in Florence, Italy.

1565 - A Spanish expedition established the first permanent European settlement in North America at present-day St. Augustine, Florida.

1664 - The Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to the British, who renamed it New York.

1900 - A hurricane struck Galveston, Texas, killing an estimated 8,000 people.

1935 - Louisiana Senator Huey P. Long, "The Kingfish" of Louisiana politics, was assassinated by Dr. Carl Austin Weiss Jr.

1941 - The 900-day Siege of Leningrad by German forces began during World War II.

1943 - During World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower announced Italy's surrender; Nazi Germany denounced Italy's decision as a cowardly act.

1951 - The San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed, formally ending World War II hostilities with Japan.

1952 - Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" was published.

1964 - Public schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia, reopened after being closed for five years by officials attempting to prevent court-ordered racial desegregation.

1966 - The science fiction series "Star Trek" debuted on television.

1974 - President Gerald Ford issued a full pardon to former President Richard Nixon for all federal crimes he may have committed while he was in office.

1986 - "The Oprah Winfrey Show” began the first of 25 seasons in national syndication.

2016 - California and federal regulators fined Wells Fargo a combined $185 million, alleging the bank’s employees illegally opened millions of unauthorized accounts for their customers in order to meet aggressive sales goals.

2017 - Hurricane Irma regained Category 5 status, battering Cuba with 160-mph winds and taking aim on the Miami area; the death toll across the Caribbean climbed past 20 after the storm ravaged islands including St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Thomas, Barbuda and Anguilla. In one of the country’s largest evacuations, officials in Florida told more than 5 million people to leave their homes ahead of the hurricane; parts of interstates 75 and 95 northbound were bumper-to-bumper.

2021 - The Supreme Court blocked the lethal injection of convicted killer John Henry Ramirez after his attorney argued that Texas was violating his religious freedom by not letting his pastor lay hands on him at the time of his lethal injection. (The court later ruled that states must accommodate the wishes of death row inmates who want to have their pastors pray aloud and even touch them during their executions.)

1958 - Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates sets a MLB record with three triples in one game.

1963 - Pitcher Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves ties Christy Mathewson's record of 13 20-win seasons.

1965 - Bert Campaneris of the Kansas City Athletics became the first major league baseball player to play all nine positions in one game.

1973 - Tom Osborne makes his head coaching debut at Nebraska and leads the fourth-ranked Huskers to a 40-13 win over #10 UCLA.

1984 - #2 Nebraska opens the season with a 42-7 win over Wyoming.


1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds tied Ty Cobb’s career record for hits, singling for hit number 4,191 during a game against the Cubs in Chicago.

1986 - Herschel Walker made his start in the National Football League (NFL) after leaving the New Jersey Generals of the USFL.

1990 - #10 Nebraska defeats Northern Illinois 60-14.

1991 - Quarterback Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills throws six touchdown passes in a 52-34 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1994 - #1 Nebraska defeats Texas Tech 42-16.

1998 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals, with his 62nd home run of the year, broke the MLB single season home run record of 61 set by Roger Maris in 1961.

2001 - #5 Nebraska defeats #17 Notre Dame 27-10.

2002 - The NFL's Houston Texans played their first regular season game. The beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-10. The Texans become just the second expansion team (Minnesota Vikings, 1961) to win their inaugural game.

2002 - Pete Sampras won his 14th Grand Slam title when he beat Andre Agassi in the U.S. Open.

2002 - The Texas Rangers set a major league record by homering in their 26th consecutive game.

2007 - #16 Nebraska defeats Wake Forest 20-17.

2012 - UCLA defeats #16 Nebraska 36-30.

2018 - Colorado defeats Nebraska 33-28 in what served as Scott Frost's debut game as Nebraska's head coach following the cancellation of the Akron game a week prior.


2019 - Rafael Nadal held off a strong comeback bid to win his 19th Grand Slam title in a five-set U.S. Open final against Daniil Medvedev.

2021 - Derek Jeter, Ted Simmons, Larry Walker and Marvin Miller were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as the Class of 2020 was honored a year later because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
