1812 - The Battle of Borodino took place as French troops clashed with Russian forces outside Moscow. (The battle, ultimately won by Russia, was commemorated by composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky with his “1812 Overture.”)

1822 - Brazil declared its independence from Brazil.

1901 - The Boxer Rebellion in China officially ended with the signing of the Peking Protocol (Peace of Beijing).

1927 - TV pioneer Philo T. Farnsworth succeeded in transmitting an image through purely electronic means by using a device called an image dissector.

1940 - Nazi Germany began its initial blitz on London during World War II.

1957 - NBC-TV debuted the original version of its animated peacock logo.

1977 - The Panama Canal treaties, calling for the United States to turn over control of the waterway to Panama, were signed in Washington, D.C.

1986 - Desmond Tutu became the first black to lead the Anglican Church in southern Africa.

1990 - Kimberly Bergalis of Fort Pierce, Florida, came forward to identify herself as the woman who had been infected with AIDS, apparently by her late dentist. (She died the following year.)

1996 - Rapper Tupac Shakur was shot on the Las Vegas Strip; he died six days later at age 25.

2006 - Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage confirmed he was the source of a leak that disclosed the identity of CIA employee Valerie Plame, saying he didn't realize Plame's job was covert.

2007 - Osama bin Laden appeared in a video for the first time in three years, telling Americans they should convert to Islam if they wanted the war in Iraq to end.

2008 - Troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were placed in government conservatorship.

2015 - Hillary Clinton, interviewed by The Associated Press during a campaign swing through Cockeye, said she did not need to apologize for using a private email account and server while at the State Department because “what I did was allowed.”

2016 - In back-to-back appearances, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton confronted their perceived weaknesses during a national security forum in New York, with Clinton, who went first, arguing that her email practices did not expose questionable judgment while Trump defended his preparedness to be commander in chief.

2017 - One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Mexico struck off the country’s southern coast, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing at least 90 people. (A deadlier quake would strike central Mexico nearly two weeks later.)

2019 - President Donald Trump said he had canceled a secret weekend meeting at Camp David with Taliban and Afghan leaders, just days before the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, after a bombing in Kabul that killed 12 people, including an American soldier.

1896 - A.H. Whiting won the first automobile race held on a racetrack. The race was held in Cranston, Rhode Island.

1963 - The National Professional Football Hall of Fame was dedicated in Canton, Ohio.

1972 - The International Olympic Committee banned Vince Matthews and Wayne Collett of the U.S. from further competition for talking to each other on the victory stand in Munich during the playing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” after winning the gold and silver medals in the 400-meter run.

1979 - The Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN) made its debut on cable television.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets establishes a new National League single-season rookie record with 236 strikeouts.

1985 - #10 Nebraska opens the season with a 17-13 loss to #17 Florida State.

1986 - The Cleveland Browns become the first team in NFL history to have a play reviewed by instant replay in a game against the Chicago Bears.

1986 - Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins threw his 100th career touchdown pass, in only his 44th NFL game, which set a NFL record.

1988 - Guy Lafleur, Tony Esposito and Brad Park are inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame.

1991 - Quarterback Ty Detmer of BYU establishes a new NCAA record for career passing yards with 11,606.

1991 - #14 Nebraska opens the season with a 59-28 win over Utah State.

1992 - MLB commissioner Faye Vincent resigns; former owner and team president of the Milwaukee Brewers, Bud Selig, is appointed interim commissioner (he would eventually be named to the role permanently in 1998.)

1996 - #1 Nebraska opens the season with a 55-14 win over Michigan State.

1998 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit his 61st home run of the season, tying Roger Maris' single-season major league record.

2002 - #9 Nebraska defeats Utah State 44-13.

2013 - #22 Nebraska defeats Southern Mississippi 56-13.


2014 - Serena Williams wins her third consecutive U.S. Open title.

2019 - Colorado upsets #25 Nebraska 34-31 in overtime.

2020 - Dustin Johnson wins the Tour Championship and claims the FedEx Cup, and with it the biggest money prize in golf at $15 million.
