1066 - William the Conqueror invaded England.

1542 - Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived in present-day San Diego.

1781 - The closing campaign of the American Revolution at Yorktown Heights, Virginia began.

1850 - Flogging was abolished as a form of punishment in the U.S. Navy.

1924 - Two U.S. Army planes landed in Seattle after completing the first around-the-world flight in 175 days.

1928 - Scottish medical researcher Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first effective antibiotic.

1939 - A German-Soviet agreement divided Poland between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II.

1958 - Voters in the African country of Guinea voted overwhelmingly for independence from France.

1962 - A federal appeals court found Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett in civil contempt for blocking the admission of James Meredith, a Black student, to the University of Mississippi. (Federal marshals escorted Meredith onto the campus two days later.)

1967 - Walter Washington became the first mayor of the District of Columbia.

1972 - Japan and China agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations.

1989 - Former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos died while in exile in Hawaii.

1991 - Jazz great Miles Davis died.

1995 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat signed an accord at the White House ending Israel’s military occupation of West Bank cities and laying the foundation for a Palestinian state.

2000 - Capping a 12-year legal battle, the federal government approved use of the abortion pill RU-486.

2012 - Citing national security risks, President Barack Obama blocked a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects in northern Oregon near a Navy base where the U.S. military flew unmanned drones and electronic-warfare planes on training missions.

2017 - House Majority Whip Steve Scalise returned to the House chamber for the first time since he was wounded three months earlier by a gunman who opened fire at a Republican baseball practice.

2019 - Voters in Afghanistan went to the polls to elect a president for the fourth time since a U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taliban regime in 2001; the vote was marred by violence, Taliban threats and widespread allegations of mismanagement. (After a series of delays, the country’s independent election commission announced months later that Ashraf Ghani had won a second term as president.)

2020 - The worldwide death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic topped 1 million according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.

2021 - Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called the 20-year war in Afghanistan a “strategic failure,” and said he had favored keeping several thousand troops in the country to prevent a collapse of the U.S.-backed government and a rapid takeover by the Taliban.

2021 - Barack and Michelle Obama dug shovels into the ground during a celebratory groundbreaking for the Obama Presidential Center along Lake Michigan in Chicago, near the Obama family home.

1901 - Nebraska defeats Kirksville Osteopaths 5-0.

1907 - Nebraska opens the season with a 53-0 win over Peru State.


1919 - The New York Giants beat Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 in a day game that lasted 51 minutes. The time set a National League record.

1920 - Eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for fixing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in the "Black Sox" scandal. (All were acquitted at trial, but all eight were banned from the game for life.)

1935 - Nebraska opens the season with a 28-7 win over the University of Chicago.

1941 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox ends the season with a .406 batting average.

1942 - The NHL's New York Americans franchise folds.

1946 - Nebraska opens the season with a 33-6 loss to Minnesota.

1955 - The World Series was televised in color for the first time. The game was between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1957 - Army defeats Nebraska 42-0.

1960 - Ted Williams hits the 521st and final home run of his career.

1963 - Nebraska defeats Minnesota 14-7.

1968 - #9 Nebraska defeats #17 Minnesota 17-14.

1974 - #10 Nebraska defeats Northwestern 49-7.


1974 - Nolan Ryan of the California Angels throws his third career no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Twins.

1976 - Muhammad Ali defeats Ken Norton in 15 rounds for the heavyweight boxing championship.

1985 - #16 Nebraska defeats Oregon 63-0.

1988 - Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Orel Herschiser breaks former Dodger Don Drysdale's franchise record with his 59th consecutive scoreless inning.

1991 - #16 Nebraska defeats #24 Arizona State 18-9.

1995 - Randy Myers (Chicago Cubs) was charged by a 27-year-old man while standing in the outfield. Myers saw him coming, dropped his glove and knocked the man down with his forearm.

1996 - #8 Nebraska defeats Colorado State 65-9.

1996 - Cockeye State running back Troy Davis rushes for 378 yards in a game against Missouri, the third-highest single-game rushing total in NCAA history.

1997 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hits his 58th home run of the season (34 he had hit with the Oakland Athletics).

2002 - #19 Cockeye State defeats #20 Nebraska 36-14.

2003 - Althea Gibson, the first African-American tennis player to win a Wimbledon championship, died.

2019 - #5 Ohio State defeats Nebraska 48-7.

2020 - The Tampa Bay Lightning defeat the Dallas Stars in six games to win their second Stanley Cup.
