1779 - John Paul Jones declared "I have not yet begun to fight!" aboard the American warship Bonhomme Richard in the battle against the British ship Serapis.

1780 - British spy John Andre was captured along with papers revealing Benedict Arnold’s plot to surrender West Point to the British.

1806 - After a three-year journey to the Pacific Northwest, the Lewis and Clark expedition returned to St. Louis.

1846 - German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovered the planet Neptune.

1939 - Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, died in London.

1952 - Vice presidential candidate Richard Nixon delivered his "Checkers" speech, rebutting charges of improper campaign financing.

1955 - A jury in Sumner, Mississippi, acquitted two white men, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, of murdering Black teenager Emmett Till. (The two men later admitted to the crime in an interview with Look magazine.)

1957 - Nine Black students who’d entered Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas were forced to withdraw because of a white mob outside.

1962 - “The Jetsons,” an animated cartoon series about a Space Age family, premiered as the ABC television network’s first program in color.

1973 - Former Argentine president Juan Peron returned to power.

1987 - Delaware Sen. Joe Biden withdrew from the Democratic presidential race following questions about his use of borrowed quotations and the portrayal of his academic record.

1999 - The Mars Climate Orbiter apparently burned up as it attempted to go into orbit around the Red Planet.

2001 - President George W. Bush returned the American flag to full staff at Camp David, symbolically ending a period of national mourning following the 9/11 attacks.

2002 - Gov. Gray Davis signed a law making California the first state to offer workers paid family leave.

2011 - After 41 years, the soap opera "All My Children" broadcast its final episode on ABC.

2011 - Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas officially requests a bid for statehood at the U.N. Security Council.

2016 - President Barack Obama vetoed a bill to allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia, arguing it undermined national security. (Both the House and Senate voted to override the veto.)

2020 - President Donald Trump refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he were to lose the election, telling reporters, “We’re going to have to see what happens.”

2021 - In an effort to combat climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a rule sharply limiting domestic production and use of hydrofluorocarbons, highly potent greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners.

1845 - The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York was formed by Alexander Joy Cartwright. It was the first baseball team in America.

1905 - Nebraska opens the season with a 30-0 win over Grand Island.

1961 - Nebraska opens the season with a 33-0 win over North Dakota.


1962 - Maury Wills breaks Ty Cobb's single-season stolen bases record with his 97th (he would go on to 104 on the year).

1972 - #9 Nebraska defeats Army 77-7.

1979 - Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals steals his 938th and final base of his career, establishing a new MLB record.

1983 - Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the 16th pitcher in MLB history to win 300 games.

1984 - Sparky Anderson becomes the first major league manager to win 100 games in each league.

1988 - Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics becomes the first player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season.

1989 - #3 Nebraska defeats Minnesota 48-0.

1995 - #2 Nebraska defeats Pacific 49-7.


1997 - The Seattle Mariners break the MLB record for most home runs in a season with 258.

2000 - #1 Nebraska defeats Cockeye 42-13.

2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 66th home run of the season to tie Sammy Sosa for the second-most ever hit in a single season.

2006 - #23 Nebraska defeats Troy 56-0.

2017 - Nebraska defeats Rutgers 27-17.


2017 - President Donald Trump tweeted that NBA star Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors was no longer invited to the White House because Curry had said he didn’t want to make such a visit with his championship team; NBA star LeBron James responded with a tweet calling Trump a “bum” and saying, “Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!”

2018 - Tiger Woods wins the Tour Championship, his first PGA Tour victory in five years and the 80th victory of his career.

2018 - New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees becomes the NFL's career passing leader, breaking Brett Favre's record with his 6,300th career completion.
