63 B.C. - Caesar Augusts was born in Rome.

1779 - John Paul Jones declared, "I have not yet begun to fight!" aboard the American warship Bonhomme Richard in the battle against the British man-of-war Serapis during the Revolutionary War.

1806 - After a three year journey to the Pacific Northwest, the Lewis and Clark expedition returned to St. Louis.

1846 - German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovered the planet Neptune.

1932 - The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded.

1939 - Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, died in London at age 83.

1949 - President Harry S. Truman announced there was evidence the Soviet Union had recently conducted a nuclear test explosion.

1952 - Vice presidential candidate Richard M. Nixon delivered his "Checkers speech" rebutting charges of improper campaign financing. (The address became known as the "Checkers" speech because of Nixon's on-air reference to the family pet, a dog named "Checkers".)

1955 - A jury in Sumner, Mississippi, acquitted two white men, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, of murdering Black teenager Emmett Till. (The two men later admitted to the crime in an interview with Look magazine.)

1957 - Nine black students who had entered Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas were forced to withdraw because of a white mob outside.

1973 - Former Argentine President Juan Peron returned to power.

1987 - Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Delaware) withdrew from the Democratic presidential race following questions about his use of borrowed quotations and the portrayal of his academic record.

1990 - Iraq threatened to destroy Middle East oil fields and attack Israel if other nations tried to force it from Kuwait.

1999 - The Mars Climate Observer apparently burned up as it was about to go into orbit around the Red Planet.

2001 - President George W. Bush returned the American flag to full staff at Camp David, symbolically ending a period of national mourning following the 9/11 attacks.

2002 - Gov. Gray Davis signed a law making California the first state to offer workers paid family leave.

2011 - The soap opera "All My Children' broadcast its final episode on ABC, ending a 41-year run.

2011 - Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas officially requests a bid for statehood at the U.N. Security Council.

2016 - President Barack Obama vetoed a bill to allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia, arguing it undermined national security. (Both the House and Senate voted to override the veto.)

2020 - A Kentucky grand jury brought no charges against Louisville police for the shooting death of a Black woman, Breonna Taylor, during a failed drug raid; prosecutors said officers were justified in using force to protect themselves after facing gunfire. (Charges of wanton endangerment were filed against fired Officer Bret Hankison for shooting into a neighboring home.) In Louisville and cities nationwide, protesters took to the streets in anger over the killings of Black people by police; two officers in Louisville were shot and wounded during the demonstrations.

2020 - The parent company of the Uncle Ben’s rice brand changed the name to Ben’s Original and dropped a logo criticized as a racial stereotype.

1845 - The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York was formed by Alexander Joy Cartwright. It was the first baseball team in America.

1905 - Nebraska opens the season with a 30-0 win over Grand Island.

1961 - Nebraska opens the season with a 33-0 win over North Dakota.


1962 - Maury Wills of the Los Angeles Dodgers breaks Ty Cobb's single-season stolen base record with his 97th of the year (he would finish the season with 104).

1972 - #9 Nebraska defeats Army 77-7.

1979 - Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals steals the 938th final final base of his career, establishing a new MLB record.

1983 - Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the 16th player in MLB history to win 300 games.

1984 - Sparky Anderson becomes the first major league manager to win 100 games in both leagues.

1988 - Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics becomes the first player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season.

1989 - #3 Nebraska defeats Minnesota 48-0.

1997 - The Seattle Mariners establish a new MLB record with 258 home runs on the year.

1995 - #2 Nebraska defeats Pacific 49-7.

2000 - #1 Nebraska defeats Cockeye 42-13.


2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 66th home run of the season, tying him with Sammy Sosa for the second most home runs hit in a single season.

2006 - #23 Nebraska defeats Troy 56-0.

2017 - Nebraska defeats Rutgers 27-17.


2018 - Capping a comeback from four back surgeries, Tiger Woods won the Tour Championship in Atlanta, the 80th victory of his PGA Tour career and his first in more than five years.

2018 - Quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints breaks Brett Favre's NFL record for career pass completions of 6,300.

2020 - Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers died at age 77.
