1519 - Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain on a voyage to find a western passage to the Spice Islands in Indonesia.

1870 - Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of modern Italy, seized the Papal States from the French, leading to the unification of Italy.

1873 - Panic swept the New York Stock Exchange in the wake of railroad bond defaults and bank failures.

1881 - Chester A. Arthur was sworn in as the 21st president of the United States, succeeding James A. Garfied, who had been assassinated.

1946 - The first Cannes Film Festival, lasting 16 days, opened in France.

1976 - Playboy magazine released an interview in which Democratic presidential nominee Jimmy Carter admitted he’d “looked on a lot of women with lust.”

1977 - The first wave of Southeast Asian "boat people" arrived in San Francisco under a U.S. resettlement program.

1984 - A suicide car bomber attacked the U.S. Embassy annex in north Beirut, killing a dozen people.

1984 - The family sitcoms “The Cosby Show” and “Who’s the Boss?” premiered on NBC and ABC, respectively.

1995 - In a move that stunned Wall Street, AT&T Corporation announced it was splitting into three companies.

2000 - Independent Counsel Robert Ray announced the end of the Whitewater investigation, saying there was insufficient evidence to charge President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary.

2001 - President George W. Bush addressed the nation and a joint session of Congress about terrorism. He also named Tom Ridge as head of the new Office of Homeland Security.

2004 - CBS News apologized for a “mistake in judgment” in its story questioning President George W. Bush’s National Guard service, saying it could not vouch for the authenticity of documents featured in the report.

2005 - Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal died at age 96.

2011 - Repeal of the U.S. military's 18-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" compromise took effect, allowing gay and lesbian service members to serve openly.

2016 - In their final speeches at the annual gathering of world leaders, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon railed against leaders who kept “feeding the war machine” in Syria, while U.S. President Barack Obama said there was no military solution to the five-year conflict.

2017 - Hurricane Maria, the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in more than 80 years, struck the island, wiping out as much as 75 percent of the power distribution lines and causing an island-wide blackout.

2020 - Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said the Republican effort to approve a replacement for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the November election was an “abuse of power”; he said voters should pick the president who would pick the justice. (Amy Coney Barrett would be confirmed days before the election.)

1902 - Nebraska opens the season with a 27-0 exhibition win over Lincoln High.


1927 - Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season. He beat his own record of 59 that he set in 1921.

1951 - MLB owners elect Ford Rick as the third commissioner.

1952 - Nebraska opens the seasons with a 46-0 win over South Dakota.

1955 - Ernie Banks (Chicago Cubs) set a major league record with his fifth grand slam of the year.

1958 - Nebraska opens the season with a 14-7 win over Penn State.

1968 - Denny McClain (Detroit Tigers) became the first player to achieve 31 wins in 37 years.

1968 - Mickey Mantle hits the 536th and final home run of his career.

1969 - Nebraska opens the season with a 31-21 loss to #5 USC.

1973 - Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in a $100,000 winner-take-all "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

1973 - Willie Mays announced that he would retire at the end of the season.

1975 - #6 Nebraska defeats Indiana 45-0.

1980 - #6 Nebraska defeats Cockeye 57-0.


1981 - Marcus Allen (USC) rushed for 274 yards and scored two touchdowns in a 21-0 victory over Indiana.

1982 - The NFL Players Association announced that a strike would begin at the completion of the Packers-Giants game on Monday night.

1984 - Pete Rose (Cincinnati Reds) recorded his 100th hit of the season. It was the 22nd consecutive season he had recorded at least 100 hits in a season.

1986 - Tony Gwynn (San Diego Padres) stole five bases in one game against Houston.

1986 - #6 Nebraska defeats Illinois 59-14.

1987 - San Francisco wide receiver Dwight Clark's NFL record streak of 105 consecutive games with a reception ends in 49ers 27-26 victory in Cincinnati.

1987 - Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears scored his 107th touchdown to break the NFL record held by Jim Brown.

1988 - American diver Greg Louganis wins the 3m springboard gold medal at the Seoul Olympics after famously hitting his head on the board the previous day.

1997 - #7 Nebraska defeats #2 Washington 27-14.

1998 - Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. sat out a game, ending his consecutive game playing streak at 2,632 over the course of 16 seasons.

2001 - #4 Nebraska defeats Rice 48-3.

2013 - Alex Rodriquez sets new MLB record with 24 Grand Slam home runs for the New York Yankees.
