1666 - The Great Fire of London broke out, destroying much of the city, including St. Paul's Cathedral.

1789 - The U.S. Treasury Department was established.

1864 - During the Civil War, Union Gen. William T. Sherman’s forces occupied Atlanta.

1901 - Vice President Theodore Roosevelt gave his "speak softly and carry a big stick" speech, regarding foreign policy at the Minnesota State Fair.

1935 - A Labor Day hurricane slammed into the Florida Keys, claiming more than 400 lives.

1945 - Japan's formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay in World War II was celebrated as Victory over Japan (V-J) Day.

1958 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Defense Education Act, which provided aid to public and private education to promote learning in such fields as math and science.

1963 - Alabama Gov. George Wallace prevented the racial integration of Tuskegee High School by encircling the building with state troopers.

1964 - One of America’s most decorated military heroes of World War I, Medal of Honor recipient Alvin C. York, died in Nashville at age 76.

1969 - In what some regard as the birth of the Internet, two connected computers at the University of California, Los Angeles passed test data through a 15-foot test cable.

1998 - A Swissair MD-11 jetliner crashed off Nova Scotia, killing all 229 people aboard.

2008 - Republicans assailed Barack Obama as the most liberal, least experienced White House nominee in history at their convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, and enthusiastically extolled their own man, John McCain, as ready to lead the nation.

2012 - Campaigning his way toward the Democratic National Convention, President Barack Obama slapped a “Romney doesn’t care” label on his rival’s health-care views and said Republicans wanted to repeal new protections for millions without offering a plan of their own.

2017 - Astronaut Peggy Whitson returned to Earth after 288 days on the International Space Station; the trip gave Whitson a total of 665 days in space, a record for any American and any woman worldwide.

2018 - Sen. John McCain was laid to rest on a grassy hill at the U.S. Naval Academy, after a horse-drawn caisson carrying the senator’s casket led a procession of mourners from the academy’s chapel to its cemetery.

2019 - A fire swept a boat carrying recreational scuba divers that was anchored near an island off the Southern California coast; the captain and four other crew members were able to escape the flames, but 34 people who were trapped below died.

2021 - A divided Supreme Court allowed a Texas law that banned most abortions to remain in effect; it prohibited abortions once medical professionals could detect cardiac activity, usually around six weeks and before most women know they’re pregnant. (The law allowed private citizens to sue providers and anyone involved in facilitating an abortion.)

1917 - Grover Cleveland Alexander (Philadelphia Phillies) pitched and won two entire games of a doubleheader versus Brooklyn (5-0 and 9-3).

1924 - Bill Tilden won his fifth straight U.S. Open men's singles title.

1957 - Warren Spahn (Milwaukee Braves) set a record for left-handed pitchers when he recorded his 41st shutout.

1962 - Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals records his 3,516th career hit, moving into second place behind only Ty Cobb on the all-time list.

1966 - The Miami Dolphins played their first regular-season game. They lost the game to the Oakland Raiders 23-14.

1970 - Billy Williams (Chicago Cubs) set a National League record when he played in his 1,117th consecutive game.

1973 - Billy Martin was fired as manager of the Detroit Tigers. Martin was relieved of his duties three days after ordering his pitchers to throw spitballs against Cleveland Indians batters.

1978 - #10 Nebraska opens the season with a 20-3 loss to #1 Alabama.

1986 - The Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs played 14 innings and used 53 players in the game. Houston won the game 8-7 when the game resumed the next day.

1990 - Bobby Thigpen (Chicago Whitesox) set a major league record with his 47th save.

1996 - Mike Greenwall (Boston Red Sox) set a major league record when he drove in all nine runs in a 9-8 win over the Seattle Mariners.

1998 - Mark McGwire (St. Louis) hit his 58th and 59th home runs of the season. The record at the time was 61 held by Roger Maris. Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa was close behind with his 56th homer of the year.

1998 - Jerry Rice (San Francisco 49ers) signed a six-year contract for $36 million. The deal made him the highest paid wide receiver in the league.

1999 - Cal Ripken (Baltimore Orioles) hit his 400th career home run.

2000 - #1 Nebraska opens the season with a 49-13 win over San Jose State.

2003 - Eric Gagne (Los Angeles) established a major league record with his 55th consecutive save.

2006 - Nebraska opens the season with a 49-10 win over Louisiana Tech.

2017 - Nebraska opens the season with a 43-36 win over Arkansas State.
