14 - The Roman Senate officially confirmed Tiberius as the second emperor of the Roman Empire, succeeding the late Augustus.

1759 - French Quebec surrendered to the British after the Sept. 13 battle on the Plains of Abraham, the last battle of the French and Indian Wars. French general Montcalm and British general Wolfe died in the fray.

1793 - President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol.

1810 - Chile declared its independence from Spain.

1850 - Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, which required the return of escaped slaves to their owners.

1851 - The first edition of "The New York Daily Times", which later became "The New York Times", was published.

1947 - The National Security Act, which created a National Military Establishment and the position of Secretary of Defense, went into effect.

1961 - United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjold was killed in a plane crash in Zambia.

1970 - Rock star Jimi Hendrix died in London at age 27.

1975 - Newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst was captured by the FBI in San Francisco, 19 months after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

2001 - A week after the Sept. 11 attack, President George W. Bush said he hoped to “rally the world” in the battle against terrorism and predicted that all “people who love freedom” would join. Letters postmarked Trenton, N.J., that later tested positive for anthrax were sent to the New York Post and NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw.

2014 - Voters in Scotland rejected independence, opting to remain part of the United Kingdom in a historic referendum.

2017 - Hurricane Maria intensified into a dangerous Category 5 storm, surging into the eastern Caribbean on a path that would take it near many of the islands recently devastated by Hurricane Irma.

2017 - Toys R Us, the pioneering big box toy retailer, announced that it was filing for bankruptcy protection, but that it would continue its normal business operations. (The company announced in March of 2018 that it would be liquidating its U.S. business.)

2020 - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at her home in Washington, D.C. at age 87 of complications from pancreatic cancer. (Her death set off a battle over whether President Donald Trump should nominate a successor or the seat should remain vacant until the outcome of the election six weeks away; Trump would go on to nominate Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed by the Republican-led Senate days before the election.)

2021 - Four space tourists safely ended their trailblazing three-day flight to orbit with a splashdown in the Atlantic, off the Florida coast; the all-amateur crew – a billionaire and his three guests - aboard the SpaceX capsule was the first to circle the world without a professional astronaut.

1956 - Mickey Mantle becomes the eighth player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs in a season.

1962 - Charlie Finley was denied permission to move the Athletics baseball team to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

1965 - #1 Nebraska defeats TCU 34-14 to open the season.

1966 - Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas breaks Y.A. Tittle's NFL record with his 212th career touchdown pass.

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeats Minnesota 35-7.

1976 - #8 Nebraska defeats Indiana 45-13.

1982 - #3 Nebraska defeated New Mexico State 68-0.

1993 - #8 Nebraska defeats UCLA 14-13.


1994 - The Ken Burns documentary "Baseball" premieres on PBS.

1996 - Roger Clemens ties his own major league record with 20 strikeouts in a game.

1997 - Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo were elected to World Golf Hall of Fame.

1999 - #4 Nebraska defeated Southern Mississippi 20-13.

1999 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs became the first player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs in two different seasons.

2004 - Nebraska defeats Pittsburgh 24-17.

2010 - #8 Nebraska defeats Washington 56-21.


2014 - The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews, Scotland, ended years of male-only exclusivity as its members voted overwhelmingly in favor of inviting women to join.

2021 - #3 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 23-16.
