1759 - French Quebec surrendered to the British after the Sept. 13 battle on the Plains of Abraham, the last battle of the French and Indian Wars. French Gen. Montcalm and British Gen. Wolfe died in the fray.

1793 - President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol.

1810 - Chile declared independence from Spain.

1850 - Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, which required the return of escaped slaves to their owners.

1851 - The first edition of "The New York Daily Times," which later became "The New York Times," was published.

1947 - The National Security Act, which created a National Military Establishment and the position of Secretary of Defense, went into effect.

1961 - Secretary-General of the U.N. Dag Hammarskjold was killed in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia).

1970 - Rock star Jimi Hendrix died in London at age 27.

1975 - Newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst was captured by the FBI in San Francisco, 19 months after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

2014 - Voters in Scotland rejected independence, opting to remain part of the United Kingdom in a historic referendum.

2020 - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a towering champion of women's rights who became the court's second female justice, died at her home in Washington, D.C. at age 87 of complications from pancreatic cancer.

1962 - Charlie Finley was denied permission to move the Athletics baseball franchise to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

1966 - Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas becomes the NFL's career touchdown pass leader with 212, surpassing Y.A. Tittle.

1994 - Ken Burns' documentary miniseries "Baseball" premiers on PBS.

1996 - Roger Clemens ties his own MLB record with 20 strikeouts in a game.

1997 - Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo were elected to World Golf Hall of Fame.

1999 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs became the first player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs in two different seasons.
