14 - The Roman Senate officially confirmed Tiberius as the second emperor of the Roman Empire, succeeding the late Augustus.

1759 - French Quebec surrendered to the British following the final battle of the French and Indian Wars.

1793 - President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol.

1810 - Chile declared its independence from Spain.

1850 - Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, which required the return of escaped slaves to their owners.

1851 - The first edition of The New York Daily Times, which later became The New York Times, was published.

1947 - The National Security Act, which created a National Military Establishment and the position of Secretary of Defense, went into effect.

1961 - Secretary-General of the U.N. Dag Hammarskjold was killed in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia).

1970 - Jimi Hendrix died in London at age 27.

1975 - Newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst was captured by the FBI in San Francisco, 19 months after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.

2001 - A week after the Sept. 11 attack, President George W. Bush said he hoped to "rally the world" in the battle against terrorism and predicted that all "people who love freedom" would join.

2014 - Voters in Scotland rejected independence, opting to remain part of the United Kingdom in a historic referendum.

2017 - Hurricane Maria intensified into a dangerous Category 5 storm, surging into the eastern Caribbean on a path that would take it near many of the islands recently devastated by Hurricane Irma.

2020 - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a towering women's rights champion who became the court's second female justice, died at her home in Washington at the age of 87 of complications from pancreatic cancer.

2021 - A billionaire and three other amateur space tourists safely ended a three-day trip to space aboard a SpaceX capsule, becoming the first crew to orbit the earth without a professional astronaut.

2022 - President Joe Biden paid his respects at Queen Elizabeth II's coffin as thousands of police, hundreds of British troops and an army of officials made final preparations for the queen's state funeral.

1962 - Baseball owners denied permission to move the Athletics to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

1965 - #1 Nebraska opens the season with a 34-14 win over TCU.

1966 - Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas throws four touchdown passes in a 38-23 win at Minnesota to surpass Y.A. Tittle as the NFL's career leader with 212 (would finish his career with 290).

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeats Minnesota 35-7.

1976 - #8 Nebraska defeats Indiana 45-13.

1982 - #3 Nebraska defeats New Mexico State 68-0.

1993 - #8 Nebraska defeats UCLA 14-13.


1994 - Ken Burns' documentary miniseries "Baseball" premiers on PBS.

1996 - Roger Clemens ties his own MLB record with 20 strikeouts in a game.

1997 - Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo were elected to World Golf Hall of Fame.

1999 - Sammy Sosa became the first player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs in two seasons.

1999 - #4 Nebraska defeats Southern Mississippi 20-13.

2004 - Nebraska defeats Pittsburgh 24-17.

2013 - Former heavyweight boxing champion Ken Norton died in Las Vegas at age 70.
