1787 - The U.S. Constitution was completed and signed by a majority of the delegates attending the constitutional convention in Philadelphia.

1862 - The bloodiest day in U.S. military history occurred at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland when more than 23,000 were killed or wounded.

1907 - Warren Burger, the 15th chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota.

1908 - Lt. Thomas Selfridge, a passenger in a plane piloted by Orville Wright, became the first airplane fatality when the craft crashed.

1937 - The likeness of President Abraham Lincoln’s head was dedicated at Mount Rushmore.

1939 - The Soviet Union invaded Poland during World War II.

1944 - During World War II, Allied paratroopers launched Operation Market Garden, landing behind German lines in the Netherlands. (After initial success, the Allies were beaten back by the Germans.)

1947 - James V. Forrestal was sworn in as the first U.S. secretary of defense.

1954 - The novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding was first published by Faber & Faber of London.

1971 - Citing health reasons, Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black retired at age 85. (Black, who was succeeded by Lewis F. Powell Jr., died eight days after making his announcement.)

1976 - NASA unveiled the space shuttle Enterprise.

1978 - After meeting at Camp David, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed a framework for a peace treaty.

1980 - Anastasio Somoza Debayle, former president of Nicaragua, was assassinated in Paraguay.

1986 - The Senate confirmed the nomination of William H. Rehnquist as the 16th chief justice of the United States.

1987 - The city of Philadelphia, birthplace of the U.S. Constitution, threw a big party to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the historic document; in a speech at Independence Hall, President Ronald Reagan acclaimed the framing of the Constitution as a milestone “that would profoundly and forever alter not just these United States but the world.”

1994 - Heather Whitestone of Alabama became the first deaf Miss America.

1996 - Former Vice President Spiro T. Agnew died at age 77.

2001 - Wall Street trading resumed for the first time since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks - its longest shutdown since the Depression; the Dow lost 684.81 points, its worst one-day point drop to date.

2003 - New York Stock Exchange chairman Dick Grasso resigned amid a furor over his $139.5 million pay package.

2004 - Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev claimed responsibility for the recent school siege in Beslan and other terrorist attacks in Russia that claimed more than 430 lives.

2011 - A demonstration calling itself Occupy Wall Street began in New York.

1917 - Honus T. Wagner retires from baseball at age 43; the Pittsburgh Pirates retire his #33.

1920 - The American Professional Football Association (APFA), the precursor to the NFL, was formed in Canton, Ohio.

1941 - Stan Musial makes his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals.

1950 - The San Francisco 49ers, formerly of the AAFC, make their NFL debut and lose 21-17.

1955 - Nebraska opens the season with a 6-0 loss to Hawaii.

1960 - Nebraska opens the season on the road and upsets #4 Texas 14-13.


1961 - The Minnesota Vikings were debuted as the new National Football League (NFL) team and win their inaugural game 37-13 over the Chicago Bears.

1966 - #3 Nebraska opens the season with a 14-10 win over TCU.

1977 - Nebraska upsets #4 Alabama 31-24.


1983 - Johnny Bench announced his retirement from baseball.

1983 - #1 Nebraska routs Minnesota on the road 84-13.

1983 - Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox broke Hank Aaron's major league record for games played when he started his 3,299th game.

1984 - Reggie Jackson hit his 500th career home run, the 13th player in MLB history to do so.

1994 - #2 Nebraska defeats #13 UCLA 49-21.

2000 - The Miami Dolphins retire Dan Marino's #13.

2001 - Professional sporting events resumed after a six-day hiatus following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

2004 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became just the third player in MLB history to hit 700 career home runs, joining Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714).

2005 - Nebraska defeats Pittsburgh 7-6.

2011 - #11 Nebraska defeats Washington 51-38.

2016 - Nebraska defeats #22 Oregon 35-32.
