1630 - The Massachusetts village of Shawmut changed its name to Boston.

1810 - Mexico began its revolt against Spanish rule.

1908 - General Motors was founded in Flint, Michigan by William C. Durant.

1919 - The American Legion was incorporated by an act of Congress.

1940 - The United States first adopted peacetime conscription when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Selective Service and Training Act into law.

1940 - Samuel T. Rayburn of Texas was elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

1966 - The Metropolitan Opera officially opened its new opera house at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts with the world premiere of Samuel Barber’s “Antony and Cleopatra.”

1974 - President Gerald Ford announced conditional amnesty for Vietnam War deserters and draft evaders.

1975 - Papua New Guinea became independent.

1982 - Lebanese Christians massacred hundreds of Palestinian refugees in Beirut.

1987 - The Montreal Protocol was signed by 25 nations, limiting production of substances that harm the ozone layer. To date, 197 nations have ratified the protocol.

2001 - President George W. Bush, speaking on the South Lawn of the White House, said there was “no question” Osama bin Laden and his followers were the prime suspects in the Sept. 11 attacks; Bush pledged the government would “find them, get them running and hunt them down.”

2007 - Contractors for the U.S. security firm Blackwater USA guarding a U.S. State Department convoy in Baghdad opened fire on civilian vehicles, mistakenly believing they were under attack; 14 Iraqis died.

2012 - In appearances on Sunday news shows, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said there was no evidence that the attack on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, was premeditated. But Libya’s interim president, Mohammed el-Megarif, told CBS he had no doubt attackers spent months planning the assault and purposely chose the date, September 11.

2013 - Aaron Alexis, a former U.S. Navy reservist, went on a shooting rampage inside the Washington Navy Yard, killing 12 people before being shot dead by police.

2016 - After five years of promoting a false conspiracy theory about Barack Obama’s birthplace, Republican Donald Trump abruptly reversed course, acknowledging that the president was born in America, but then claiming the “birther movement” was begun by his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

1924 - Jim Bottomley knocked in 12 runs in a single game setting a major league baseball record.

1937 - The Redskins NFL franchise plays its first game in Washington, D.C., defeating the New York Giants 13-3.

1950 - The Cleveland Browns, formerly of the All-American Football Conference (AAFC), play their first NFL game, a 35-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

1953 - The American League gave permission to the St. Louis Browns to move to Baltimore, where they would become the Orioles.

1967 - Nebraska opens the season with a 17-7 win over Washington.

1972 - #10 Nebraska defeats Texas A&M 37-7.


1973 - Running back O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills rushes for a then NFL single-game record 250 yards in a 31-13 win over the New England Patriots.

1975 - Pittsburgh second baseman Rennie Stennett is second to hit 7-for-7 in a 9-inning MLB game as Pirates rout Chicago Cubs, 22-0 at Wrigley Field.

1978 - #12 Nebraska defeats Hawaii 56-10.

1988 - Tom Browning of the Cincinnati Reds pitched the 12th perfect game in major league baseball in a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1989 - #4 Nebraska defeats Utah 42-30.

1993 - Dave Winfield of the Minnesota Twins becomes the 19th player in MLB history to reach 3,000 hits.

1995 - #2 Nebraska defeats Arizona State 77-28.

1996 - Paul Molitor of the Minnesota Twins becomes the 21st player in MLB history to reach 3,000 hits.

1997 - Mark McGwire signs with the St. Louis Cardinals for $26 million.

2000 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs becomes the second player in MLB history to hit 50 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons, joining Mark McGwire.

2004 - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman imposed a lockout due to an impasse in contract negotiations. The players union and NHL officials did not meet again until December 9.

2006 - #4 USC defeated #19 Nebraska 28-10.

2007 - O.J. Simpson was arrested in the alleged armed robbery of sports memorabilia collectors in Las Vegas. (Simpson was later convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery and sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison; he was released in 2017.)

2017 - Northern Illinois defeated Nebraska 21-17.

2018 - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sets an NFL record of 10 touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season, after torching the Pittsburgh Steelers with six TD passes in a 42-37 victory.
