1630 - The Massachusetts village of Shawmut changed its name to Boston.

1638 - France's King Louis XIV was born.

1810 - Mexico began a successful revolt against Spanish rule.

1857 - The song "Jingle Bells" by James Pierpont was copyrighted under its original title, "One Horse Open Sleigh."

1893 - Hundreds of thousands of settlers took part in a land run in Oklahoma's "Cherokee Strip."

1908 - General Motors was founded by William C. Durant.

1919 - The American Legion was incorporated by an act of Congress.

1940 - The United Sates first adopted peacetime conscription when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act into law.

1940 - Rep. Samuel T. Rayburn, D-Texas, the longest-serving House speaker in history, was first elected to the post.

1966 - The Metropolitan Opera opened its new home at New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

1974 - President Gerald Ford announced conditional amnesty for Vietnam War deserters and draft evaders.

1975 - Papua New Guinea became independent.

1982 - Lebanese Christians massacred nearly 1,400 Palestinian refugees in Beirut.

1987 - The Montreal Protocol was signed by 25 nations, limiting the production of substances that harm the ozone layer. To date, 197 nations have ratified the protocol.

2001 - President George W. Bush, speaking on the South Lawn of the White House, said there was “no question” Osama bin Laden and his followers were the prime suspects in the Sept. 11 attacks; Bush pledged the government would “find them, get them running and hunt them down.”

2002 - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced that Iraq had unconditionally accepted the return of U.N. weapons inspectors.

2004 - Hurricane Ivan plowed into the Gulf Coast with 130 mph winds and a major storm surge; the storm was blamed for at least 115 deaths.

2007 - A deadly shooting in Baghdad involving the U.S. security firm Blackwater USA left 17 Iraqi civilians dead.

2007 - O.J. Simpson was arrested in the alleged armed robbery of sports memorabilia collectors in Las Vegas. (Simpson was later convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery and sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison; he was released in 2017.)

2008 - The federal government announced an emergency $85 billion loan to rescue AIG, the world's largest insurance company.

2012 - In appearances on Sunday news shows, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said there was no evidence that the attack on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, was premeditated. But Libya’s interim president, Mohammed el-Megarif, told CBS he had no doubt attackers spent months planning the assault and purposely chose the date, September 11.

2013 - Aaron Alexis, a former U.S. Navy reservist, went on a shooting rampage inside the Washington Navy Yard, killing 12 people before being shot dead by police.

2014 - President Barack Obama declared that the Ebola epidemic in West Africa could threaten security around the world and ordered 3,000 U.S. troops to the region in emergency aid muscle.

2016 - After five years of promoting a false conspiracy theory about Barack Obama’s birthplace, Republican Donald Trump abruptly reversed course, acknowledging that the president was born in America, but then claiming the “birther movement” was begun by his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

1924 - Jim Bottomley knocked in 12 runs in a single game setting a major league baseball record.

1937 - The Washington Redskins played their inaugural NFL game, defeating the New York Giants 13-3.

1950 - The Cleveland Browns, formerly a member of the AAFC, play their first NFL game, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 35-10.

1953 - The St. Louis Browns of the American League were granted permission to relocate to Baltimore, where they would become the Baltimore Orioles.

1967 - Nebraska opens the season with a 17-7 win at Washington.

1972 - #10 Nebraska defeats Texas A&M 37-7.


1973 - Running back O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills sets a then single-game NFL rushing record with 250 yards in a 31-13 win over the New England Patriots.

1978 - #12 Nebraska defeats Hawaii 56-10.

1988 - Tom Browning of the Cincinnati Reds pitched the 12th perfect game in major league baseball in a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1989 - #4 Nebraska defeats Utah 42-30.

1993 - Dave Winfield of the Minnesota Twins becomes the 19th player in MLB history to record 3,000 hits.

1995 - Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves sets a new record with 17 consecutive road victories.

1995 - #2 Nebraska defeats Arizona State 77-28.

2000 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs joins Mark McGwire as the only players in MLB history to hit 50 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons.

2006 - #4 USC defeats #19 Nebraska 28-10.

2017 - Northern Illinois upsets Nebraska 21-17.


2018 - Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sets an NFL record with 10 touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season.

2020 - College football’s Big Ten conference reversed its plan to push fall sports to spring because of the pandemic, and said it would open its football season in late October; the about-face came after sharp pressure from coaches, players, parents and President Donald Trump.
