1609 - Henry Hudson began his exploration of the Hudson River.

1857 - The S.S. Central America (also known as the "Ship of Gold") sank off the coast of South Carolina after sailing into a hurricane in one of the worst maritime disasters in American history; 425 people were killed and thousands of pounds of gold sank with the ship to the bottom of the ocean.

1940 - The Lascaux cave paintings, estimated to be more than 17,000 years old, were discovered in southwestern France.

1953 - Future President John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier.

1958 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Cooper v. Aaron that Arkansas officials who were resisting public school desegregation orders could not disregard the high court's rulings.

1959 - The Soviet Union launched its Luna 2 space probe, which made a crash landing on the moon.

1962 - In a speech at Rice University in Houston, President John F. Kennedy reaffirmed his support for the manned space program, declaring: "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

1977 - South African black civil rights leader Steven Bilko died while in police custody, triggering an international outcry.

1992 - Dr. Mae Carol Jemison became the first Black woman in space board the space shuttle Endeavor.

1994 - Truck driver Frank Eugene Corder piloted a stolen single-engine Cessna airplane into restricted airspace in Washington, D.C. and crashed it into the South Lawn of the White House.

1999 - Indonesia announced it would allow an international peacekeeping force to restore order in East Timor.

2003 - In the Iraqi city of Fallujah, U.S. forces mistakenly opened fire on vehicles carrying police, killing eight of them.

2008 - A Metrolink commuter train struck a freight train head-on in Los Angeles, killing 25 people.

2008 - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who was under investigation for corruption, resigned as prime minister.

2013 - Voyager 1, launched 36 years earlier, became the first man-made object to ever leave the solar system.

1976 - The Seattle Seahawks play their first NFL regular season game, a 30-24 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

1979 - Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox became the first American League player to get 3,000 career hits and 400 career home runs.

1984 - Michael Jordan signs a seven-year contract to play for the Chicago Bulls.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets set a rookie strikeout record with his 251st strikeout of the season.

1992 - At the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Stefan Edberg defeats Michael Chang in a match that lasted 5 hours and 26 minutes.

2002 - A judge announced that a jury would have to decide who would get the ball that Barry Bonds hit for his record 73rd home run. The ownership of the ball, with an estimated value of $1 million, was being disputed between two men that had been in the bleachers.

2004 - The Detroit Lions defeat the Chicago Bears 20-16 to snap an NFL-record 24-game road losing streak.

2005 - Mark Messier announces his retirement from hockey.

2006 - Rick DiPietro (New York Islanders) signed a 15-year contract worth $67.5 million.

2011 - Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal to win his first U.S. Open.
