1789 - Alexander Hamilton was appointed the first Secretary of the Treasury.

1814 - An American fleet scored a decisive victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812.

1936 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) in Nevada.

1941 - Groundbreaking took place for the Pentagon.

1941 - In a speech that drew accusations of anti-Semitism, Charles A. Lindbergh told an America First rally in Des Moines, Cockeye, that “the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt administration” were pushing the United States toward war.

1954 - The Miss America pageant made its network TV debut on ABC; Miss California, Lee Meriwether, was crowned the winner.

1962 - The Beatles recorded their first single, "Love Me Do."

1971 - Former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev died at age 77.

1973 - Chilean President Salvador Allende died during a violent military coup.

1997 - In Scotland, voters approved the establishment of a parliament to run their domestic affairs, after 290 years of union with England.

2001 - Two hijacked commercial jets were crashed by terrorists into the World Trade Center in New York City, ultimately causing the collapse of both towers. A short while later, another plane was crashed into the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. and a fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In total nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives in the attacks.

2006 - In a prime-time address, President George W. Bush invoked the memory of the victims of the 9/11 attacks as he staunchly defended the war in Iraq, though he acknowledged that Saddam Hussein was not responsible for the attacks.

2012 - Armed gunmen stormed the American consulate in Benghazi and killed U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other embassy officials.

2021 - Marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, victims’ relatives and four U.S. presidents paid respects at the sites where hijacked planes killed nearly 3,000 people, while others gathered for observances or volunteer projects across the country; the anniversary was observed weeks after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, once again ruled by the same Taliban militant group that gave safe haven to the 9/11 plotters.

2021 - Al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri appeared in a video marking the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, attacks, months after rumors spread that he was dead. (The U.S. would kill al-Zawahri in a drone strike in Kabul in July 2022.)

Today in Sports History - September 11

1927 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees become the first player to hit 50 home runs in a season.

1928 - Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers makes his final appearance.

1943 - The NHL approved the Hockey Hall of Fame. The official building for the hall of fame was not opened until August 26, 1961 on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition.

1946 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds played to a scoreless tie in 19 innings.

1956 - Frank Robinson (Cincinnati Reds) tied a rookie record for most home runs in one season when he hit his 38th of the year.

1971 - #2 Nebraska opens the season with a 34-7 win over Oregon.

1974 - The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets set a National League record when they played 25 innings. It was the second longest game in professional baseball history.

1976 - #1 Nebraska opens the season with a 6-6 tie against LSU.

1982 - #3 Nebraska opens the season with a 42-7 win over Cockeye.


1985 - Pete Rose (Cincinnati Reds) achieved hit number 4,192 to break the record held by Ty Cobb.

1993 - #9 Nebraska defeats Texas Tech 50-27.

1999 - Brett Favre and Robert Brooks of the Green Bay Packers completed a 99-yard touchdown reception against the Chicago Bears to tie an NFL record.

1999 - #5 Nebraska defeats California 45-0.

2004 - Southern Mississippi defeats Nebraska 21-17 in Lincoln.

2010 - #6 Nebraska defeats Idaho 38-17.

2021 - Nebraska defeats Buffalo 28-3.


2021 - British teenager Emma Raducanu beat Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open final to become the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era.
