1635 - Religious dissident and Rhode Island founder, Roger Williams, was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

1701 - The Collegiate School of Connecticut, now known as Yale University, was chartered in New Haven.

1776 - A group of Spanish missionaries settled in present-day San Francisco.

1888 - For the first time, the public was admitted to the Washington Monument.

1910 - A coal dust explosion at the Starkville Mine in Colorado left 56 miners dead.

1914 - The Belgian city of Antwerp fell to German forces during World War I.

1930 - Aviator Laura Ingalls became the first woman to make a solo transcontinental flight across the United States.

1936 - The first generator at Boulder (later Hoover) Dam began transmitting electricity to Los Angeles.

1958 - Pope Pius XII died at age 82.

1967 - Latin American Marxist guerrilla leader Che Guevara, age 39, was executed in Bolivia while attempting to incite revolution.

1974 - Businessman Oskar Schindler, credited with saving about 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust, died in Frankfurt, West Germany (at his request, he was buried in Jerusalem).

1975 - Soviet scientist Andrei Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end the nuclear arms race.

1985 - The hijackers of the Achille Lauro cruise liner surrendered after the ship arrived in Port Said, Egypt.

1990 - David Souter was sworn in as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

2001 - Letters postmarked in Trenton, New Jersey that later tested positive for anthrax spores were mailed to Sens. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont).

2001 - In the first daylight raids since the start of U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan, jets bombed the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar.

2006 - North Korea announced that it had conducted its first nuclear weapons test.

2006 - Google Inc. announced it was purchasing YouTube Inc. for $1.65 billion in a stock deal.

2007 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at an all-time high of 14,164.53.

2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell below 9,000 -- to 8,579.19 -- for the first time in six years.

2009 - President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for what the Nobel Committee called "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

2010 - Chile's 33 trapped miners cheered and embraced each other as a drill punched into their underground chamber where they had been stuck for an agonizing 66 days.

2014 - Six U.S. military planes arrived in the Ebola hot zone with more Marines as West African leaders pleaded for the world’s help in dealing with what Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma described as “a tragedy unforeseen in modern times.”

2016 - During a bitter debate in St. Louis, Hillary Clinton declared that Donald Trump’s vulgar comments about women revealed “exactly who he is” and proved his unsuitability to be president; firing back, Trump accused Clinton of attacking women involved in Bill Clinton’s extramarital affairs and promised she would “be in jail” if he were president.

2018 - Brett Kavanaugh took the bench for the first time as a Supreme Court justice in a jovial atmosphere that was at odds with the rancor that surrounded his confirmation.

2019 - Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said for the first time that President Donald Trump must be impeached for abusing the powers of his office to help his own reelection.

1909 - Nebraska defeats Knox 34-0.

1915 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 31-0.


1919 - The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox to win the World Series. The win would later be tainted when eight members of the White Sox were charged with throwing the game in the "Black Sox" scandal.

1920 - Nebraska defeats Colorado State 7-0.

1916 - Woodrow Wilson becomes the first sitting U.S. president to attend a World Series game.

1926 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 14-7.

1928 - The New York Yankees sweep the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.

1934 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Detroit Tigers in seven games to win the World Series.

1937 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 20-7.

1938 - The Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears play a penalty-free NFL game.

1938 - The New York Yankees sweep the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series.

1943 - Indiana defeats Nebraska 54-13.

1944 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the St. Louis Browns in six games to win the World Series.

1948 - Colorado defeats Nebraska 19-6.

1949 - The New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in five games to win the World Series.

1954 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 7-3.

1958 - The New York Yankees defeat the Milwaukee Braves in seven games to win the World Series.

1965 - #2 Nebraska defeats Wisconsin 37-0.

1986 - Gilbert Perreault of the Buffalo Sabres becomes the 12th player in NHL history to score 500 career goals.

1991 - The San Jose Sharks defeat the Calgary Flames 4-3 for their first NHL win.

1997 - University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith announces his retirement.

1999 - #4 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 49-14.

2000 - Brett Hull (Dallas Stars) scored his 611th NHL goal. The goal allowed him to pass his father, Bobby Hull, on the all time scoring list bringing him to number 9.

2002 - The Los Angeles Kings retired Wayne Gretzky's #99.

2004 - Texas Tech defeats Nebraska 70-10.

2012 - Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison following his conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.
