1884 - The Naval War College was established in Newport, Rhode Island.

1889 - The Moulin Rouge cabaret opened in Paris.

1927 - "The Jazz Singer," the first full-length talking picture, starring Al Jolson, debuted.

1939 - In a speech to the Reichstag, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler spoke of his plans to reorder the ethnic layout of Europe -- a plan that would entail settling the "Jewish problem."

1949 - Japanese-American radio broadcaster, Iva Toguri D'Aquino (known as "Tokyo Rose"), was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $10,000 for treason.

1949 - President Harry S. Truman signed the Mutual Defense Assistance Act, providing $1.3 billion in military aid to NATO countries.

1973 - The Yom Kippur War began when Syria and Egypt attacked Israel. (Israel, initially caught off guard, managed to push back the Arab forces before a cease fire finally took hold in the nearly three-week conflict.)

1976 - In a debate with Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter, President Gerald R. Ford asserted there was "no Soviet domination of eastern Europe." Ford later conceded that he had misspoken.

1979 - President Jimmy Carter received Pope John Paul II, the first ever papal visit to the White House.

1981 - Egypt's President Anwar Sadat was assassinated in Cairo by Islamic militants while reviewing a military parade.

1987 - The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 9-5 against the nomination of Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court.

1989 - Bette Davis died in France at age 81.

2004 - The top U.S. arms inspector in Iraq, Charles Duelfer, reported finding no evidence that Saddam Hussein's regime had produced weapons of mass destruction after 1991.

2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 10,000 for the first time since 2004.

2010 - A presidential commission said the Obama administration had blocked efforts by government scientists to tell the American public just how bad the Gulf oil spill could become and committed other missteps that raised questions about its competence and candor during the crisis.

2010 - Social networking app Instagram was launched by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.

2014 - The U.S. Supreme Court unexpectedly cleared the way for a dramatic expansion of gay marriage in the United States as it rejected appeals from five states seeking to preserve their bans, effectively making such marriages legal in 30 states.

2015 - Gen. John F. Campbell, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, recommended before Congress that President Barack Obama revise his plan to cut the current U.S. force of 9,800 and keep more than 1,000 U.S. troops in the country beyond 2016.

2018 - In the narrowest Senate confirmation of a Supreme Court justice in nearly 150 years, Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed by a 50-48 vote; he was sworn in hours later.

2019 - The FBI said California prison inmate Samuel Little, who claimed to have killed more than 90 women across the country, was considered to be the deadliest serial killer in U.S. history, and that all of his confessions appeared to be credible.

1880 - The National League kicked the Cincinnati Reds out of the league for selling beer.

1894 - Nebraska opened the season with an 8-0 exhibition win over Lincoln High.

1899 - Cockeye State defeated Nebraska 33-0.

1900 - Nebraska played an alumni team to a 0-0 tie in an exhibition game.

1906 - Nebraska defeated South Dakota 4-0.


1911 - Legendary pitcher Cy Young makes his final major league appearance in a 13-3 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was the 906th career game for Young.

1917 - Nebraska opened the season with a 100-0 win over Nebraska Wesleyan.

1923 - Illinois defeated Nebraska 24-7 to open the season.


1926 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees becomes the first player to hit three home runs in a World Series game as the Yankees defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-5 in Game 4.

1928 - Nebraska opened the season with a 12-0 win over Cockeye State.

1934 - Minnesota defeated Nebraska 20-0.


1936 - The New York Yankees defeat the New York Giants in six games to win the World Series.

1941 - The New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in five games to win the World Series.

1945 - Tavern owner "Billy Goat" Sianis buys a seat for his goat for Game 4 of the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers, but is escorted out and casts a "goat curse" on the Chicago Cubs.

1945 - Minnesota defeated Nebraska 61-7.

1947 - The New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in seven games to win the World Series.

1951 - Nebraska defeated Kansas State 1-0 via forfeit.

1956 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 9-7.

1962 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 36-22.


1963 - The Los Angeles Dodgers sweep the New York Yankees to win the World Series.

1969 - The New York Mets won the first-ever National League Championship Series, defeating the Atlanta Braves 7-4 in Game 3; the Baltimore Orioles won the first-ever American League Championship Series, defeating the Minnesota Twins 11-2 in Game 3.

1973 - #2 Nebraska defeated Minnesota 48-7.

1979 - #5 Nebraska defeated New Mexico State 57-0.


1983 - Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders recorded his 25th career hat trick.

1984 - #8 Nebraska defeated #9 Oklahoma State 17-3.

1985 - Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers set a then NFL record with 57 pass attempts in a game.

1990 - #8 Nebraska defeated Kansas State 45-8.

1993 - After nine seasons and three championships with the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan announces his retirement from the NBA. (He would return on March 18, 1995 and lead the Bulls to another three NBA titles.)

1995 - The Colorado Avalanche (formerly the Quebec Nordiques), won their first NHL game, defeating the Detroit Red Wings.

1996 - Nick Lowrey of the New York Jets ties Jan Stenerud's record with 373 made field goals.

2001 - #4 Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 48-14.

2003 - The Indianapolis Colts became the first team in NFL history to win after trailing by 21 or more points with less than four minutes to play in regulation. The game when into overtime, where the Colts would defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-35.

2007 - #17 Missouri defeated #25 Nebraska 41-6.

2010 - Roy Halladay pitched the second no-hitter in postseason history, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS.

2012 - #12 Ohio State defeated #21 Nebraska 63-38.

2017 - The Vegas Golden Knights make their NHL debut with a 2-1 win over the Dallas Stars.
