1822 - Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States, was born in Delaware, Ohio.

1861 - During the Civil War, the United States Navy authorized construction of the first ironclad ship, the USS Monitor.

1887 - The International Herald Tribune was published for the first time.

1923 - Actor Charlton Heston was born John Charles Carter in Evanston, Illinois.

1931 - The comic strip "Dick Tracy" by Chester Gould made its debut.

1940 - Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini conferred at Brenner Pass in the Alps during World War II.

1957 - Jimmy Hoffa was elected president of the Teamsters Union.

1957 - The Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, into orbit around the Earth, ushering in the Space Age and Space Race.

1965 - Pope Paul VI made the first visit to the Western Hemisphere by a reigning pope when he came to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly, where he urged delegates to adopt as their solemn oath: "No more war, war never again."

1970 - Rock singer Janis Joplin was found dead of an accidental drug overdose at age 27 in Hollywood.

2019 - The impeachment probe reached directly into the White House as House Democrats subpoenaed officials about contacts with Ukraine; President Donald Trump signaled that his administration would not cooperate.

1873 - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is formed, the oldest existing professional sports team in North America still using its original name.

1895 - The first U.S. Open Golf Tournament was held in Newport, Rhode Island; the event was won by 19-year-old Horace Rawlins.

1902 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 10-0.

1906 - The Chicago Cubs finished the season with a record of 116-36. The .736 winning percentage has been unmatched since.

1913 - Nebraska opens the season with Washburn 19-0.

1919 - Nebraska opens the season with a 18-0 loss to Cockeye.

1924 - Nebraska opens the season with a 9-6 loss to Illinois.

1930 - Nebraska opens the season with a 13-0 win over Texas A&M.

1941 - Nebraska opens the season with a 14-0 win over Cockeye State.

1947 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 28-13.

1952 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 16-0.


1955 - The Brooklyn Dodgers win their first World Series in seven attempts, defeating the New York Yankees in seven games.

1958 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 7-6.

1959 - The first World Series to be played west of St. Louis began in Los Angeles.

2008 - #4 Missouri defeats Nebraska 52-17.

2014 - #10 Michigan State defeats #19 Nebraska 27-22.


2018 - Tom Brady of the New England Patriots becomes only the third quarterback in NFL history to record 500 career touchdown passes, joining Peyton Manning and Brett Favre (Drew Brees would later also achieve the milestone).
