1682 - The city of Philadelphia is founded by William Penn.

1787 - The Federalist Papers, which called for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, were published.

1858 - Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was born in New York City.

1904 - New York City's first rapid transit subway, the IRT, opened.

1938 - Du Pont announced it would name its new synthetic yarn "nylon".

1941 - The Chicago Daily Tribune dismissed the possibility of war with Japan, editorializing, "She cannot attack us. That is a military impossibility. Even our base at Hawaii is beyond the effective striking power of her fleet."

1954 - U.S. Air Force Col. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. was promoted to brigadier general, the first Black officer to achieve that rank in the USAF.

1962 - During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down while flying over Cuba, killing the pilot, U.S. Air Force Maj. Rudolf Anderson Jr.

1978 - Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for their work toward a Middle East peace accord.

1995 - A sniper killed one soldier and wounded 18 others at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. (Paratrooper William J. Kreutzer was convicted in the shootings, and condemned to death; the sentence was later commuted to life in prison.)

1997 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 554.26 points, forcing the stock market to shut down for the first time since the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

2001 - In Washington, the search for deadly anthrax widened to thousands of businesses and 30 mail distribution centers.

2002 - Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was elected president of Brazil in a runoff, becoming the country's first elected leftist leader.

2005 - White House counsel Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to the Supreme Court after three weeks of criticism from fellow conservatives.

2005 - Surgeons in France performed the world's first partial face transplant on a woman who was mauled by a dog.

2008 - Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was convicted of seven corruption charges for lying about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy contractor. (A judge later dismissed the case, saying prosecutors had withheld evidence.)

2015 - President Barack Obama, addressing the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Chicago, defended officers who had come under intense scrutiny amid a breakdown in relations between law enforcement and minority communities, and said police couldn’t be expected to contain problems that society refuses to solve.

2015 - Walgreens confirmed it was buying rival pharmacy chain Rite Aid for about $9.4 billion in cash.

2018 - A gunman shot and killed 11 congregants and wounded six others at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history; authorities said the suspect, Robert Bowers, raged against Jews during and after the rampage. (Bowers, who is awaiting trial, has pleaded not guilty; prosecutors are seeking a death sentence.)

2018 - Hundreds of Mexican federal officers carrying plastic shields blocked a Central American caravan from advancing toward the United States after several thousand migrants turned down the chance to apply for refugee status in Mexico and obtain a Mexican offer of benefits.

2019 - In an address from the White House, President Donald Trump announced that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had died after U.S. special operations forces cornered him during a raid in Syria. (Al-Baghdadi blew himself up as U.S. forces approached.)

2019 - Freshman Rep. Katie Hill, a rising Democratic star in the House, resigned amid an ethics probe; she said explicit private photos of her with a campaign staffer had been “weaponized” by her husband and political operatives.

1995 - The contract that finalized the move of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore was signed in secret.

1996 - Bud Adams, owner of the Houston Oilers, announced that he would allow his team to play one final season in Houston before moving the franchise to Nashville, Tennessee.

1996 - Irving Fryar of the Philadelphia Eagles became the 15th player in NFL history to catch 600 passes in a career.

1999 - The New York Yankees sweep the Atlanta Braves to win the World Series.

2003 - The Monday Night Football Game between the Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers was played in Tempe, Arizona, due to wild fires in the San Diego area.

2004 - Barry Bonds' 700th home run ball was sold at auction for $804,129.

2004 - After an 86 year wait, the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series since 1918, sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals.

2006 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Detroit Tigers in six games to win their 10th World Series.

2007 - #17 Texas defeats Nebraska 28-25.

2015 - American soccer star Abby Wambach announces her retirement.
