1774 - The First Continental Congress adjourned in Philadelphia.

1825 - The Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie to the Hudson River, opened.

1861 - The legendary Pony Express officially ceased operations, giving way to the transcontinental telegraph. (The last run of the Pony Express was completed the following month.)

1881 - Wyatt Earp, his two brothers, and Doc Holliday were involved in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.

1944 - The World War II Battle of Leyte Gulf ended in a major Allied victory over the Japanese, whose naval capabilities were severely crippled.

1949 - President Harry S. Truman signed a measure raising the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour.

1962 - In one of the most dramatic verbal confrontations of the Cold War, American U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson asked his Soviet counterpart during a Security Council debate whether the USSR had placed missiles in Cuba.

1972 - National security adviser Henry Kissinger declared "peace is at hand" in Vietnam.

1975 - Anwar Sadat became the first Egyptian president to pay an official visit to the United States.

1979 - South Korean President Park Chung Hee was assassinated by the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency.

1980 - Israeli President Yitzhak Navon became the first Israeli head of state to visit Egypt.

1984 - A newborn with a severe heart defect was given the heart of a baboon in an experimental transplant in Loma Linda, California; she lived for 21 more days with the transplant.

1994 - Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel and Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali of Jordan signed a peace treaty in a ceremony attended by President Bill Clinton.

2001 - President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act, giving authorities unprecedented ability to search, seize, detain or eavesdrop in their pursuit of possible terrorists.

2002 - Russian government forces stormed the Moscow theater held by Chechen rebels; more than 100 hostages were killed.

2010 - A day after an earthquake sparked a deadly tsunami, Indonesia saw another natural disaster as Mount Merapi began erupting explosively, resulting in hundreds of deaths in the weeks that followed.

2015 - The World Health Organization, throwing its global weight behind years of experts’ warnings, declared that processed meats raised the risk of colon and stomach cancer and that red meat was probably harmful, too.

2019 - Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi blew himself up during a raid by U.S. special operations forces on his compound in Syria.

1996 - The New York Yankees defeat the Atlanta Braves in six games to win their 23rd World Series title.

1996 - #5 Nebraska defeats Kansas 63-7.

1997 - The Florida Marlins defeat the Cleveland Indians in seven games to win their first World Series.

2000 - The New York Yankees defeat the New York Mets in fives games to win the "Subway Series" and their third consecutive World Series crown.

2002 - Nebraska defeats Texas A&M 38-31.

2005 - The Chicago White Sox swept the Houston Astros to win their first World Series since 1917.

2013 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 34-23.

2018 - In the longest World Series game by both innings and time, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in 18 innings in a Game 3 that lasted 7 hours, 20 minutes.
