1915 - More than 25,000 women marched in New York City, demanding the right to vote.

1942 - During World War II, Britain launched a major offensive against Axis forces at El Alamein in Egypt, resulting in an Allied victory.

1944 - The Battle of Leyte Gulf began; the largest naval battle in World War II resulted in a major Allied victory against Japanese forces.

1946 - The United Nations General Assembly convened in New York City for the first time.

1956 - A student-sparked revolt against Hungary’s Communist rule began; as the revolution spread, Soviet forces started entering the country, putting down the uprising within weeks.

1973 - President Richard Nixon agreed to turn White House tape recordings requested by the Watergate special prosecutor over to Judge John J. Sirica.

1983 - A suicide truck bombing at Beirut International Airport in Lebanon killed 241 U.S. Marines and sailors.

1987 - The U.S. Senate rejected the Supreme Court nomination of Robert H. Bork on a vote of 58-42.

1989 - Twenty-three people were killed in an explosion at a Phillips Petroleum chemical complex in Pasadena, Texas.

1995 - A jury in Houston convicted Yolanda Saldivar of murdering Tejano singing star Selena.

2001 - Apple released the iPod. An estimated 450 million iPod devices were sold before the line was discontinued in 2022.

2002 - Chechen rebels seized a crowded Moscow theater, taking hundreds hostage. (Russian forces stormed the building the next day.)

1910 - The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Chicago Cubs in five games to win the World Series.

1921 - The Green Bay Packers play their first game, defeating the Minneapolis Marines 7-6.

1945 - The Brooklyn Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson to a minor league contract with the Montreal Royals.

1978 - Bryan Trottier (New York Islanders) broke an NHL record when he scored six points in one period.

1988 - Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins) passed for 521 yards, three touchdowns and completed 35 of 60 against the New York Jets. It was considered the single-best passing day in NFL history.

1993 - The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win the World Series.

1993 - The Toronto Maple Leafs set an NHL record when they won their ninth straight game at the start of the season.

1998 - Mark Messier (Vancouver Canucks) became only the 10th player in NHL history to reach 600 career goals.

2000 - In the "Monday Night Miracle," down 30-7 at the end of the third quarter, New York Jets pull together an improbable comeback with 4 touchdowns and a field goal in the fourth quarter, eventually defeating the Miami Dolphins 40-37 in overtime.

2002 - Brett Hull (Detroit Red Wings) got his 1,250th career point.

2019 - Kyrie Irving scores 50 points, setting an NBA record for most points in a debut with a new team leading the Brooklyn Nets to a 127-126 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
