1803 - The U.S. Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase.

1936 - Helen Keller’s teacher, Anne Sullivan Macy, died in Forest Hills, N.Y., at age 70.

1944 - Gen. Douglas MacArthur returned to the Philippines, 30 months after he had declared "I shall return."

1947 - The U.S. House Un-American Activities Committee opened meetings about alleged Communist infiltration in the Hollywood film industry.

1964 - Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, died in New York City at age 90.

1967 - A jury in Meridian, Mississippi, convicted seven men of violating the civil rights of slain civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner; the seven received prison terms ranging from 3 to 10 years.

1968 - Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

1973 - During the Watergate scandal, Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William B. Ruckelshaus resigned and special prosecutor Archibald Cox were dismissed by President Richard Nixon in what came to be known as the "Saturday Night Massacre."

1977 - Three members of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in the crash of their chartered plane near McComb, Mississippi.

1987 - Ten people were killed when an Air Force jet crashed into a Ramada Inn hotel near Indianapolis International Airport after the pilot, who was trying to make an emergency landing, ejected safely.

1990 - Three members of the rap group "2 Live Crew" were acquitted by a jury in Fort Lauderdale, Florida of violating obscenity laws with an adults-only concert in nearby Hollywood the previous June.

2000 - Egyptian-born Ali Mohamed, a U.S. citizen who'd served in the Army, pleaded guilty in New York to helping plan the U.S. embassy bombings in Africa in 1998 that killed 224 people.

2001 - Officials announced that anthrax had been discovered in a House postal facility on Capitol Hill.

2004 - A U.S. Army staff sergeant, Ivan “Chip” Frederick, pleaded guilty to abusing Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. (Frederick was sentenced to eight years in prison; he was paroled in 2007.)

2010 - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez hailed what they called their strong strategic relationship, saying they were united in efforts to establish a “new world order” that would eliminate Western dominance over global affairs.

2011 - Moammar Gadhafi, Libya's dictator for 42 years, was killed as revolutionary fighters overwhelmed his hometown of Sirte and captured the last major bastion of resistance two months after his regime fell; Gadhafi was 69.

2018 - Saudi Arabia announced that journalist Jamal Khashoggi had been killed in Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul; there was immediate international skepticism over the Saudi account that Khashoggi had died during a “fistfight.”

2019 - Voters in Bolivia went to the polls for a presidential election that three-term incumbent Evo Morales would claim to have won. (Morales would resign in November when the police and army withdrew support after weeks of demonstrations over allegations of election fraud.)

1904 - Nebraska defeated Lincoln Medics 29-0 in an exhibition game.

1906 - Cockeye State defeated Nebraska 14-2.


1910 - A baseball with a cork center was used in a World Series game for the first time.

1917 - Nebraska defeated Notre Dame 7-0.

1923 - Nebraska and Kansas played to a 0-0 tie.

1928 - Nebraska defeated Syracuse 7-6.


1931 - Baseball Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma.

1934 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 6-0.

1936 - The Associated Press released its first weekly college football poll. Minnesota was ranked #1 in that initial poll, the remaining top 10 teams were: Duke, Army, Northwestern, Purdue, USC, Notre Dame, Washington, Pittsburgh and Yale.

1936 - Nebraska is ranked #15 in the inaugural Associated Press weekly college football poll.

1945 - Cockeye State defeated Nebraska 27-7.

1951 - Minnesota defeated Nebraska 39-20.

1956 - Indiana defeats Nebraska 19-14.

1962 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 26-6.

1973 - #11 Nebraska defeats #18 Kansas 10-9.


1976 - The New York Nets trade Julius "Dr. J" Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers.

1979 - #3 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 36-0.

1982 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Milwaukee Brewers in seven games to win the World Series.

1982 - In Moscow, 340 people were crushed to death at a Soviet-Dutch soccer game. Police had herded the fans down an open, icy staircase. The details of the incident were not published in the USSR until seven years later.

1984 - #5 Nebraska defeats Colorado 24-7.

1988 - The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Oakland Athletics in five games to win the World Series.

1989 - The University of Houston recorded 1,021 yards of total offense in a 95-21 rout of Southern Methodist University.

1990 - The Cincinnati Reds swept the Oakland Athletics to win the World Series.

1990 - #4 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 31-3.

1992 - The host Toronto Blue Jays beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in the first World Series game played outside of the United States.

1996 - Andruw Jones (Atlanta Braves), nineteen years old, became the youngest player to hit a home run in the World Series. He hit two home runs against the New York Yankees.

2001 - #3 Nebraska defeats Texas Tech 41-31.

2004 - The Boston Red Sox rallied from a 3-0 series deficit to defeat the New York Yankees in Game 7 to win the ALCS and advance to the World Series.

2007 - Texas A&M defeats Nebraska 36-14.

2012 - Nebraska defeats Northwestern 29-28.

2018 - Nebraska defeats Minnesota 53-28.
