1869 - Political and spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India.

1919 - President Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed.

1944 - The two-month-long Warsaw Uprising was squelched by Nazi troops battling the Polish underground during World War II; more than 250,000 people were killed during the event.

1950 - The "Peanuts" comic strip by Charles M. Schultz, first appeared in newspapers.

1958 - The West African colony of Guinea proclaimed independence from France.

1967 - Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black justice on the United States Supreme Court.

1984 - Richard W. Miller became the first FBI agent to be arrested and charged with espionage. (Miller was tried three times; he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but was released after nine years.)

1985 - Actor Rock Hudson died at age 59 after a battle with AIDS.

1990 - The U.S. Senate voted 90-9 to confirm Supreme Court nominee David H. Souter.

1998 - Gene Autry, the singing cowboy and owner of the California Angels baseball team, died at age 91.

2000 - The International Space Station got its first residents as an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts arrived aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule for a four-month stay.

2002 - A man was shot and killed in a grocery store parking lot in Wheaton, Maryland, the first victim in a series of sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C. area that left 10 dead.

2006 - A man took a group of girls hostage in an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania., killing five and wounding five others before committing suicide.

2010 - A coalition of progressive and civil rights groups marched by the thousands on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., pledging to support Democrats struggling to keep power on Capitol Hill.

2015 - President Barack Obama said he wouldn’t sign another temporary government funding bill after the current one expired Dec. 11, insisting that congressional Republicans and Democrats work out a long-term budget deal with the White House.

2017 - Rock star Tom Petty died at a Los Angeles hospital at age 66, one day after suffering a heart attack at his home in Malibu, California.

2018 - President Donald Trump ignited a crowd at a campaign rally in Mississippi by mocking Christine Blasey Ford over her claim that she had been sexually assaulted by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh decades ago; Trump also said it's a "very scary time for young men in America" who could be considered guilty based on an accusation.

2019 - House Democrats threatened to make White House defiance of a congressional request for testimony and documents potential grounds for an article of impeachment. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged for the first time that he had been on the phone call in which President Donald Trump pressed Ukraine’s president to investigate Democrat Joe Biden.

1908 - Addie Joss of the Cleveland Indians threw the fourth perfect game in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

1909 - Nebraska opens the season with a 6-6 tie against South Dakota.

1915 - Nebraska opens the season with a 48-13 win over Drake.

1920 - Nebraska opens the season with a 14-0 win over Washburn.


1920 - The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates played the only triple-header in major league history, with the Reds winning 2 of 3 games.

1926 - Nebraska opens the season with a 21-0 win over Drake.

1932 - The New York Yankees sweep the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series.

1937 - Nebraska opens the season with a 14-9 win over Minnesota.

1943 - Nebraska opens the season with a 54-0 loss to Minnesota.


1947 - The Federatino Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) formally established Formula One racing in Grand Prix competition.

1948 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 39-13.

1948 - The first automobile race to use asphalt, cement and dirt roads took place in Watkins Glen in New York. It was the first road race in the U.S. following World War II.

1950 - Bob Shaw of the Chicago Cardinals sets an NFL record with five TD receptions in a 55-13 win over the Baltimore Colts; Cardinals quarterback Jim Hardy throws six TD passes in the game.

1954 - The New York Giants sweep the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series.

1969 - The Seattle Pilots play their final game in Seattle, losing to the Oakland Athletics 3-1. (The team would move to Milwaukee the next season and become the Brewers.)

1970 - One of two chartered twin-engine planes carrying the Wichita State University football team to Utah crashed into a mountain near Silver Plume, Colorado, killing 31 of the 40 people on board.

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeats Utah State 42-6.

1976 - #5 Nebraska defeats Miami (FL) 17-9.


1980 - Muhammad Ali, at age 38, comes out of a two-year retirement to challenge undefeated world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas; Holmes won the bout in the 10th round on a TKO.

1982 - #8 Nebraska defeats #20 Auburn 41-7.

1983 - Wide receiver Art Monk begins hi NFL streak of 183 consecutive games with at least one reception in the Washington Redskins 37-35 win over the Los Angeles Raiders.

1983 - The Green Bay Packers erupt for an NFL record 49 points in the first half (35 in the second quarter) to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 55-14.

1986 - New York Mets' Dwight Gooden becomes first pitcher to collect 200 strikeouts in each of his first 3 seasons when he records 7 in 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1994 - Legendary Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula defeats the Cincinnati Bengals who were led by David Shula in the first-ever NFL meeting pitting father against son as opposing head coaches. The Dolphins won the game 23-7.

1999 - Ray Bourque of the Boston Bruins becomes highest goal-scoring defenseman in NHL history with his 386th career goal in the Bruins' 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

1999 - #21 Alabama defeats #3 Florida 40-39 in overtime to snap the Gaytors' 30-game home winning streak.

1999 - The Atlanta Thrashers play their first game in franchise history in a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

1999 - #6 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 38-14.

2001 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first player in major league history to hit 60 or more home runs in three different seasons.

2004 - The Montreal Expos earn their final win in franchise history in a 6-3 victory over the New York Mets. (The team would relocate to Washington, D.C. and become the Nationals the following season.)

2004 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 14-8.

2005 - NFL plays first regular season game outside United States when the Arizona Cardinals defeat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-14 in Mexico City, Mexico.

2016 - Veteran broadcaster Vin Scully calls his final game for the Los Angeles Dodgers after a record 67 seasons.
