1869 - Political and spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India.
1919 - President Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke, which left him partially paralyzed.

1941 - During World War II, German armies launched an all-out drive against Moscow; Soviet forces succeeded in holding on to their capital.

1944 - The two-month-long Warsaw Uprising was squelched by Nazi troops battling the Polish underground; it is believed up to 250,000 people died.

1950 - The "Peanuts" comic strip by Charles M. Schultz made its debut in newspapers.

1958 - Guinea proclaimed independence from France.

1959 - Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone" made its debut on CBS with the episode "Where Is Everybody?" starring Earl Holliman.

1967 - Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

1984 - Richard W. Miller became the first FBI agent to be arrested and charged with espionage. (Miller was tried three times; he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but was released after nine years.)

1986 - The Senate joined the House in voting to override President Reagan's veto of stiff economic sanctions against South Africa.

1998 - Gene Autry, the singing cowboy and former owner of the Los Angeles Angels baseball franchise, died at age 91.

2006 - An armed milk truck driver took a group of girls hostage in an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, killing five of them and wounding five others before taking his own life.

2013 - A jury in Los Angeles cleared a concert promoter of negligence, rejecting a lawsuit brought by Michael Jackson's mother claiming AEG Live had been negligent in hiring the doctor who killed the pop star with an overdose of a hospital anesthetic in 2009.

2017 - Rock superstar Tom Petty died at a Los Angeles hospital at age 66, a day after going into cardiac arrest at his home.

2019 - House Democrats threatened to make White House defiance of a congressional request for testimony and documents potential grounds for an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

2020 - Stricken by COVID-19, President Donald Trump was injected with an experimental drug combination at the White House before being flown to a military hospital, where he was given Remdesivir, an antiviral drug.

1908 - Addie Joss (Cleveland Indians) pitched the fourth perfect game in major league baseball history.

1909 - Nebraska opens the season with a 6-6 tie against South Dakota.

1915 - Nebraska opens the season with a 48-13 win over Drake.

1920 - Nebraska opens the season with a 14-0 win over Washburn.


1920 - The Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates played the only triple-header in baseball history. The Reds won 2 of the 3 games.

1926 - Nebraska opens the season with a 21-0 win over Drake.

1932 - Washington Redskins (as Boston Braves) play franchise's debut NFL game; lose 14-0 to Brooklyn Dodgers.

1937 - Nebraska opens the season under new head coach Lawrence McCeney "Biff" Jones with a 14-9 win over Minnesota.

1938 - Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians strikes out a record 18 Detroit Tigers; Indians still lose 4-1.

1943 - Nebraska opens the season under new coach Adolph J. Lewandowski with a 54-0 loss to Minnesota.

1947 - The Federatino Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) formally established Formula One racing in Grand Prix competition.

1948 - The first automobile race to use asphalt, cement and dirt roads took place in Watkins Glen in New York. It was the first road race in the U.S. following World War II.

1948 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 39-13.

1954 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 39-14.


1954 - The New York Giants sweep the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series.

1965 - #3 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 44-0.

1970 - One of two chartered twin-engine planes flying the Wichita State University football team to Utah crashed into a mountain near Silver Plume, Colorado, killing 31 of the 40 people on board.

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeats Utah State 42-6.

1976 - #5 Nebraska defeats Miami (FL) 17-9.

1982 - #8 Nebraska defeats #20 Auburn 41-7.


1983 - Green Bay Packers erupt for NFL record 49 points in the first half (35 in the second quarter) to clobber the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 55-14.

1999 - #6 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 38-14.

2001 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first player in MLB history to hit 60 or more home runs in three different seasons.

2004 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 14-8.

2016 - Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster Vin Scully signed off for the last time, ending 67 years behind the mic for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he called the team's 7-1 loss to the Giants in San Francisco.

2021 - Nebraska defeats Northwestern 56-7.

2022 - Police firing tear gas after an Indonesian soccer match in an attempt to stop violence triggered a disastrous crush of fans that left at least 125 people dead.
