1783 - The first manned balloon flight took place in Paris as Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier ascended in a basket attached to a tethered Montgolfier hot-air balloon, rising to about 75 feet.

1860 - Eleven-year-old Grace Bedell of Westfield, New York wrote a letter to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln, suggesting he could improve his appearance by growing a beard.

1914 - With the support of President Woodrow Wilson, the Clayton Antitrust Act, which made it illegal for companies to buy competitors' stock, was passed.

1917 - Mata Hari, a World War I spy, was executed by firing squad in Vincennes, France.

1928 - The German dirigible Graf Zeppelin landed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, completing its first commercial flight across the Atlantic.

1945 - The former premier of Vichy France, Pierre Laval, was executed for treason.

1946 - Nazi war criminal Hermann Goering fatally poisoned himself hours before he was to have been executed.

1951 - I Love Lucy, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, made its television debut.

1954 - Hurricane Hazel made landfall on the Carolina coast as a Category 4 storm; Hazel was blamed for some 1,000 deaths in the Caribbean, 95 in the U.S. and 81 in Canada.

1966 - The U.S. Department of Transportation was created.

1966 - The revolutionary Black Panther Party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California.

1969 - Peace demonstrators staged activities across the country, including a candlelight march around the White House, as part of a moratorium against the Vietnam War.

1976 - Democrat Walter F. Mondale and Republican Bob Dole faced off in the first debate between vice-presidential nominees.

1990 - Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

1990 - South Africa's Separate Amenities Act, which had barred blacks from public facilities for decades, was scrapped.

1991 - The nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court was approved by the U.S. Senate on a 52-48 vote.

1993 - Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work to end apartheid in South Africa.

2001 - Bethlehem Steel Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

2002 - ImClone Systems founder Sam Waksal pleaded guilty in New York in the biotech company's insider trading scandal.

2003 - China became the third nation to launch a staffed space mission.

2005 - Iraqis voted to approve a constitution.

2009 - A false report that a 6-year-old boy was aboard a runaway balloon in Colorado captivated a global TV audience. (The boy's parents later pleaded guilty to charges they made up the story.)

2015 - President Barack Obama abandoned his pledge to end America’s longest war, announcing plans to keep at least 5,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan at the end of his term in 2017 and hand the conflict off to his successor.

2016 - Republican Donald Trump sought to undermine the legitimacy of the U.S. presidential election, pressing unsubstantiated claims that the contest was “rigged” against him.

2017 - Actress and activist Alyssa Milano tweeted that women who had been sexually harassed or assaulted should write “Me too” as a status; within hours, tens of thousands had taken up the #MeToo hashtag (using a phrase that had been introduced 10 years earlier by social activist Tarana Burke.)

2020 - With their debate in Miami canceled following the president’s coronavirus infection, President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden squared off in dueling televised town halls. Biden hedged on whether he would require all Americans to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Responding to a New York Times report citing tax returns showing he had business debts exceeding $400 million, Trump said, “$400 million is a peanut,” and insisted that he didn’t owe money to Russia or to any “sinister people.”

1923 - The New York Yankees defeat the New York Giants in six games to win the World Series.

1925 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Washington Senators in seven games to win the World Series.

1927 - Nebraska defeats Grinnell 58-0.

1932 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 7-6.


1933 - The Philadelphia Eagles play their first NFL game, a 56-0 loss to the New York Giants.

1935 - The NHL's St. Louis Eagles fold.

1988 - Oklahoma sets an NCAA record for single-game rushing yards with 768 in a 70-24 win over Kansas State.

1989 - Wayne Gretzky broke Gordie Howe's NHL career scoring record of 1,850 points.

1994 - #2 Nebraska defeats #16 Kansas State 17-6.

1995 - The Carolina Panthers win their first game, 26-15 over the New York Jets.

2001 - The 0-4 Dallas Cowboys and the 0-4 Washington Redskins played on Monday Night Football. It was the only time in the 31-year history of Monday Night Football that two 0-4 teams played. The Cowboys won the game 9-7.

2005 - Nebraska defeats Baylor 23-14.

2007 - Nebraska announces the firing of athletic director Steve Pederson.


2007 - The New York Yankees signed third baseman Alex Rodriguez to a record 10-year, $275 million contract, the richest in sports history.

2016 - #10 Nebraska defeats Indiana 27-22.
