1775 - The U.S. Navy had its beginnings as the Continental Congress authorized the construction of a naval fleet.

1792 - The cornerstone of the White House was laid in Washington, D.C.

1843 - The Jewish organization B'nai B'rith was founded.

1932 - President Herbert Hoover and Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes laid the cornerstone for the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington.

1943 - Italy declared war on Germany, its former Axis partner, during World War II.

1972 - A Uruguayan chartered flight carrying 45 people crashed in the Andes; survivors resorted to feeding off the remains of some of the dead in order to stay alive until they were rescued more than two months later.

1974 - Television talk show host Ed Sullivan died in New York City at age 72.

1981 - Egypt's vice president Hosni Mubarak was elected president, one week following the assassination of president Anwar Sadat.

1999 - In Boulder, Colorado, the JonBenet Ramsey grand jury was dismissed after 13 months of work with prosecutors saying there wasn’t enough evidence to charge anyone in the 6-year-old beauty queen’s slaying.

2003 - The U.N. Security Council approved a resolution expanding the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

2007 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, after meeting with human-rights activists in Moscow, told reporters the Russian government under Vladimir Putin had amassed so much central authority that the power-grab could undermine its commitment to democracy.

2010 - Rescuers in Chile using a missile-like escape capsule pulled 33 men one by one to fresh air and freedom 69 days after they were trapped in a collapsed mine a half-mile underground.

2011 - Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund billionaire at the center of one of the biggest insider-trading cases in U.S. history, was sentenced by a federal judge in New York to 11 years behind bars.

2017 - President Donald Trump accused Iran of violating the 2015 nuclear accord, but did not pull the U.S. out of the deal or re-impose nuclear sanctions. (Trump would pull the U.S. out of the deal the following May and restore harsh sanctions.)

2017 - Attorneys general in nearly 20 states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the decision to end a federal subsidy under the Affordable Care Act that lowered out-of-pocket medical costs for consumers with modest incomes.

2021 - U.S. officials said they would reopen land borders to nonessential travel starting in November, ending a 19-month freeze.

2021 - The government reported that another jump in consumer prices in September sent inflation up 5.4% from where it was a year earlier, as tangled global supply lines continue to create havoc.

2021 - At the age of 90, actor William Shatner – best known as Captain Kirk on “Star Trek” – rode into space and back aboard a ship built by Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company, becoming the oldest person to travel in space.

1900 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 30-0.


1903 - The Boston Americans (Red Sox) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the first modern World Series in eight games.

1906 - Nebraska defeats Drake 5-0.

1914 - The Boston Braves defeat the Philadelphia Athletics to win the World Series in four games.

1915 - The Boston Red Sox defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in five games to win the World Series.

1917 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 47-0.

1921 - The New York Giants defeat the New York Yankees in eight games to win the World Series; it was the final series using the best-of-nine format.

1923 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 24-0.

1928 - Nebraska defeats Montana State 26-6.

1934 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 14-13.

1945 - #8 Indiana defeats Nebraska 54-14.


1947 - The first NHL All-Star Game was held, with a team of All-Stars defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1951 - Penn State defeats Nebraska 15-7.

1951 - A football with a rubber covering was used for the first time. Georgia Tech beat Louisiana State 25-7.

1956 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 10-7.

1960 - Bill Mazeroski of the Pittsburgh Pirates hits a walk off home run in Game 7 to defeat the New York Yankees 10-9 and win the World Series.

1961 - Jacky Lee (Houston Oilers) threw for 457 yards and two touchdowns against the Boston Patriots. The game ended 31-31.

1962 - Nebraska defeats North Carolina State 19-14.

1967 - The first game of the new American Basketball Association (ABA) was played with the Oakland Oaks defeating the Anaheim Amigos 132-129; the game featured a red, white and blue basketball and introduced the 3-point field goal to the sport of basketball.

1967 - The Seattle SuperSonics make their NBA debut in a 144-116 loss to the San Francisco Warriors.

1970 - Dave McNally (Baltimore Orioles) became the only pitcher to date to hit a grand slam in the World Series.

1971 - The first World Series night game was telecast on NBC. Baltimore defeated Pittsburgh 4-3 in Game 4 at Three Rivers Stadium.

1973 - #12 Missouri defeats #2 Nebraska 13-12.

1979 - #5 Nebraska defeats Kansas 42-0.


1982 - The International Olympic Committee approves the reinstatement of Jim Thorpe's gold medals from the 1912 Olympics.

1984 - #6 Nebraska defeats Missouri 33-23.

1985 - Phil Simms (New York Giants) passed for 513 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. He set NFL records with 62 pass attempts and 29 first downs.

1990 - #7 Nebraska defeats Missouri 69-21.

1993 - The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim win their first NHL game in franchise history.

1996 - Nick Lowrey of the New York Jets breaks Jan Stenerud's NFL record with his 374th career field goal.

1998 - The Pittsburgh Penguins filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in their history.

1998 - The NBA canceled regular season games, due to work stoppage, for first time in its 51-year history.

2001 - #4 Nebraska defeats Baylor 48-7.

2007 - Oklahoma State defeats Nebraska 45-14.

2018 - Northwestern defeats Nebraska 34-31 in overtime.


2019 - American Simone Biles becomes the most decorated gymnast in history when she wins her record 25th medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
