1775 - The Continental Congress authorized the construction of a naval fleet.

1792 - The cornerstone of the White House was laid by President George Washington in the District of Columbia.

1843 - The Jewish organization B'nai B'rith was founded.

1845 - Texas ratified a state constitution.

1925 - Margaret Thatcher, the first female British prime minister, was born Margaret Roberts in Grantham, England.

1943 - Italy declared war on its former Axis partner Germany during World War II.

1960 - Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy participated in the third televised debate of the presidential campaign, with Nixon in Hollywood, California, and Kennedy in New York.

1972 - A Uruguayan chartered flight carrying 45 people crashed in the Andes; survivors resorted to feeding off the remains of some of the dead in order to stay alive until they were rescued more than two months later.

1974 - Longtime television host Ed Sullivan died in New York City at age 73.

1981 - Egypt's vice president Hosni Mubarak was elected president, one week following the assassination of Anwar Sadat.

1999 - The JonBenet Ramsey grand jury was dismissed after 13 months; prosecutors said there wasn't enough evidence to charge anyone in the 6-year-old's strangulation.

1999 - The Senate rejected the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, with 48 senators voting in favor and 51 against, far short of the 67 needed for ratification.

2000 - South Korean President Kim Dae-jung was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

2003 - The U.N. Security Council approved a resolution expanding the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

2006 - The United Nations General Assembly appointed South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon the next U.N. secretary-general.

2008 - The Dow Jones industrial average soared 936.42 points – it's largest one-day increase – ending eight consecutive days of stock market declines.

2010 - Rescuers in Chile pulled 33 men one by one to freedom 69 days after they were trapped in a collapsed mine a half-mile underground.

2011 - Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund billionaire at the center of one of the biggest insider-trading cases in U.S. history, was sentenced by a federal judge in New York to 11 years behind bars.

2020 - In the first of two days of questioning by the Senate Judiciary Committee, Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett deflected Democrats’ questions on abortion, health care and a possible disputed-election fight; she declined to say whether she would recuse herself from any election-related cases involving President Donald Trump.

2020 - Early voting began with long lines in Texas, one of the few places in the U.S. not allowing widespread mail balloting during the pandemic.

1900 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 30-0.


1903 - The Boston Americans (now Red Sox) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in eight games to win the first World Series.

1906 - Nebraska defeats Drake 5-0.

1915 - The Boston Red Sox defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in five games to win the World Series.

1917 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 47-0.

1921 - The New York Giants defeat the New York Yankees to win the World Series.

1923 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 24-0.

1928 - Nebraska defeats Montana State 26-6.

1934 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 14-13.

1945 - #8 Indiana defeats Nebraska 54-14.


1947 - The Toronto Maple Leafs lost to a group of NHL All-Stars in the first official All-Star Game.

1951 - Penn State defeats Nebraska 15-7.

1951 - In Atlanta, a football with a rubber covering was used for the first time. Georgia Tech beat LSU 25-7.

1956 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 10-7.

1960 - The World Series ended with a home run for the first time as Bill Mazeroski of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a round-tripper in the ninth inning of Game 7 against the New York Yankees.

1962 - Nebraska defeats North Carolina State 19-14.

1967 - The first game of the new American Basketball Association was played. Pat Boone, the owner of the Oakland Oaks, sang the national anthem; the Oaks defeated the Anaheim Amigos 132-129. The ABA introduced the 3-point shot to the game of basketball and used an iconic red-white-and blue basketball.

1967 - The Seattle SuperSoncis (now Oklahoma City Thunder) play their inaugural game in a 144-116 loss to the San Francisco Warriors.

1971 - The first World Series night game was telecast on NBC. Baltimore defeated Pittsburgh 4-3 in Game 4 at Three Rivers Stadium.

1973 - #12 Missouri upsets #2 Nebraska 13-12.

1979 - #5 Nebraska defeats Kansas 42-0.

1984 - #6 Nebraska defeats Missouri 33-23.


1985 - Phil Simms (New York Giants) passed for 513 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. He set NFL records with 62 pass attempts and 29 first downs.

1990 - #7 Nebraska defeats Missouri 69-21.

1996 - Nick Lowery of the New York Jets breaks Jan Stenerud's NFL record for career field goals made with 374.

1998 - The NBA canceled the first two weeks of its regular season because of a lockout.

1998 - The Pittsburgh Penguins filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in their history.

2001 - #4 Nebraska defeats Baylor 48-7.

2002 - The Anaheim Angels defeated the Minnesota Twins to advance to their first World Series.

2007 - Oklahoma State defeats Nebraska 45-14.

2018 - Northwestern defeats Nebraska 34-31 in overtime.


2019 - American Simone Biles becomes the most decorated gymnast in history when she wins record 25th medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

2019 - Brigid Kosgei of Kenya sets a new world record in the women's marathon, winning the Chicago Marathon in a time of 2:14:04.
