1845 - The U.S. Naval Academy opened in Annapolis, Maryland.

1886 - The tuxedo dinner jacket made its debut at a ball in Tuxedo Park, New York.

1911 - Sun Yat-sen's revolutionaries overthrew the Manchu Qing Dynasty in China.

1913 - The Panama Canal was effectively completed as President Woodrow Wilson sent a signal from the White House by telegraph, setting off explosives that destroyed a section of the Gamboa Dike.

1957 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower apologized to the finance minister of Ghana, Komla Agbeli Gbdemah, after the official was refused seating in a Howard Johnson’s restaurant near Dover, Delaware.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy, responding to the Thalidomide birth defects crisis, signed an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act requiring pharmaceutical companies to prove that their products were safe and effective prior to marketing.

1970 - Fiji gained its independence from Britain.

1973 - Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned after being charged with tax evasion.

1985 - Actor and director Orson Welles died in Los Angeles at age 70.

1985 - U.S. fighter jets forced an Egyptian plane carrying the hijackers of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro to land in Italy, where the gunmen were taken into custody.

2001 - California Rep. Nancy Pelosi became minority whip.

2001 - U.S. jets pounded the Afghan capital of Kabul. President George W. Bush unveiled a list of 22 most-wanted terrorists, including Osama bin Laden.

2002 - Congress gave President George W. Bush authorization to use military force against Iraq.

2004 - "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve died in Mount Kisco, New York at age 52. Reeve had become a quadriplegic after a horse riding accident in 1995.

2005 - Angela Merkel became Germany's first female chancellor and its first leader from the former Communist east.

2008 - Connecticut's Supreme Court ruled that gay couples have the right to marry.

2010 - President Barack Obama delivered one of his most stinging criticisms yet of the GOP record to several thousand people in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood as he urged voters not to sit out the midterm elections.

2010 - Kim Jong Il’s heir apparent, Kim Jong Un, joined his father at a massive military parade in his most public appearance since being unveiled as North Korea’s next leader.

2016 - Amid controversy over Donald Trump’s past sexual comments about women, House Speaker Paul Ryan effectively abandoned his party’s nominee, telling anxious fellow lawmakers he would not campaign for or defend Trump in the election’s closing weeks; pro-Trump members rebelled in anger, accusing Ryan of conceding the election to Hillary Clinton.

1998 - #18 Texas A&M upsets #2 Nebraska 28-21.

2011 - Nelson Cruz (Texas Rangers) hit the first-ever postseason walk-off grand slam to give the Rangers a 7-3 win. The win gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the ALCS over the Detroit Tigers.
