1845 - The U.S. Naval Academy opened in Annapolis, Maryland.

1886 - The tuxedo dinner jacket made its debut at a ball in Tuxedo Park, New York.

1911 - Chinese revolutionaries launched an uprising that led to the collapse of the Qing (or Manchu) Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China.

1943 - Chiang Kai-shek took the oath of office as president of China.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy, responding to the Thalidomide birth defects crisis, signed an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act requiring pharmaceutical companies to prove that their products were safe and effective prior to marketing.

1966 - The Beach Boys’ single “Good Vibrations,” written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love was released by Capitol Records.

1970 - Fiji gained its independence from Great Britain.

1973 - Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, accused of accepting bribes, pleaded no contest to one count of federal income tax evasion, and resigned his office.

1985 - Actor and director Orson Welles died in Hollywood at age 70.

1997 - The International Campaign to Ban Landmines and its coordinator, Jody Williams, were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.

2001 - California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi became minority whip.

2001 - A month after the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. jets pounded the Afghan capital of Kabul while President George W. Bush unveiled a list of 22 most-wanted terrorists, including Osama bin Laden.

2002 - Congress gave President George W. Bush authorization to use military force against Iraq.

2013 - Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth and one of the last surviving Mercury 7 astronauts, died at age 88.

1924 - The Washington Senators defeat the New York Giants in seven games to win the World Series.

1925 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 9-6.

1926 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the New York Yankees in seven games to win the World Series.

1931 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Athletics in seven games to win the World Series.

1931 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 13-0.

1936 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 7-0.


1937 - The New York Yankees defeat the New York Giants in five games to win the World Series.

1942 - Indiana defeats Nebraska 12-0.

2011 - Nelson Cruz (Texas Rangers) hit the first-ever postseason walk-off grand slam to give the Rangers a 7-3 win. The win gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the ALCS over the Detroit Tigers.

2015 - Wisconsin defeats Nebraska 23-21.

2017 - The U.S. soccer team failed to qualify for the World Cup, eliminated with a 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago; it ended a run of seven straight U.S. appearances at soccer’s showcase event.
