1605 - The Gunpowder Plot to blow up the English Parliament failed when Guy Fawkes was seized before he could carry out the plan.

1781 - The Continental Congress elected John Hanson of Maryland its chairman, giving him the title of "President of the United States in Congress Assembled."

1872 - Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for trying to vote in the presidential election (she was trying to vote for President Ulysses S. Grant).

1872 - President Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) won a second term in office over Horace Greeley.

1895 - George B. Selden of Rochester, New York received the first U.S. patent for an automobile.

1912 - Democrat Woodrow Wilson was elected president, defeating incumbent Republican William Howard Taft, former President Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive Party) and Socialist Eugene V. Debs.

1935 - Parker Brothers began marketing the board game "Monopoly".

1940 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrat) won an unprecedented third term in office when he defeated Republican Wendell L. Willkie.

1956 - Britain and France landed troops in Egypt during fighting between Egyptian and Israeli forces around the Suez Canal.

1968 - The first black woman representative to serve in Congress, Shirley Chisholm, was elected.

1968 - Republican Richard M. Nixon won the presidency, defeating Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey and third-party candidate George C. Wallace.

1974 - Ella T. Grasso of Connecticut became the first woman to win a gubernatorial office without succeeding her husband.

1994 - Former President Ronald Reagan announced that he had Alzheimer's disease.

1996 - President Bill Clinton won a second term in office, defeating Republican Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole.

1999 - A federal judge ruled Microsoft Corp. a monopoly.

2003 - President George W. Bush signed a bill outlawing the procedure known by its critics as "partial-birth abortion;" less than an hour later, a federal judge in Nebraska issued a temporary restraining order against the ban. (In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.)

2006 - Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced by the Iraqi High Tribunal to hang for crimes against humanity.

2009 - A shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas left 13 people dead; Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was charged in the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base.

2010 - Cable channel MSNBC suspended host Keith Olbermann for two shows for making unapproved political donations.

2014 - A day after sweeping Republican election gains, President Barack Obama and incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to try to turn divided government into a force for good rather than gridlock, yet warned of veto showdowns as well.

2015 - A woman who kept mentally disabled adults captive in the basement of a Philadelphia home and in other states for their disability checks was sentenced by a federal judge to life in prison; Linda Weston, 55, apologized during the hearing, saying: “I believe in God and God knows what happened.”

2019 - Virginia Democrats took full control of the statehouse for the first time in more than two decades, as suburban voters turned out in big numbers to back Democratic candidates. Residents of Tucson, Arizona, voted overwhelmingly not to become an official “sanctuary city” with more restrictions on how and when police could enforce immigration laws. Voters in Kansas City, Missouri, overwhelmingly approved removing the name of Dr. Martin Luther King from one of the city’s most historic boulevards, less than a year after the city council decided to rename The Paseo for the civil rights icon.

1898 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 18-6.

1921 - Nebraska defeats Pittsburgh 10-0.

1927 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 47-13.

1946 - A glass backboard broke shattered for the first time in an NBA game. Chuck Connors of the Boston Celtics was the man that broke it.

1949 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 27-13.

1955 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 10-7.


1959 - The American Football League was formed with eight charter members: Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Texans (Kansas City Chiefs), Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers (Tennessee Titans), Los Angeles Chargers, New York Titans (Jets), and the Oakland Raiders (Las Vegas Raiders).

1984 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NFL had exceeded antitrust limits in attempting to stop the Oakland Raiders from moving to Los Angeles.

1988 - #7 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 51-16.

1994 - At age 45, George Foreman became the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history when he knocked out Michael Moorer in the 10th round of their WBA fight in Las Vegas.

1994 - #1 Nebraska defeats Kansas 45-17.

1995 - Warren Moon (Minnesota Vikings) became the 6th player in NFL history to pass for 40,000 career yards.

1995 - John Elway (Denver Broncos) became the 7th player in NFL history to pass for 40,000 career yards.

1997 - The Milwaukee Brewers became the first major league baseball team to switch leagues during the 20th century. They moved from the American League to the National League.

2005 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 40-15.

2011 - Northwestern upsets #9 Nebraska 28-25.


2011 - Former Penn State defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, is arrested on 40 counts of sexual abuse over a 15-year period.

2016 - #6 Ohio State defeats #9 Nebraska 62-3.
