1842 - Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois.

1880 - James and John Ritty of Dayton, Ohio patented the first cash register.

1922 - Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt.

1924 - Nellie T. Ross of Wyoming was elected the nation's first female governor, to serve out the term of her husband who had died in office.

1942 - During World War II, Axis forces retreated from El Alamein in North Africa in a major victory for British forces commanded by Lt. Gen. Bernard Montgomery.

1956 - Russian troops attacked Budapest and crushed the Hungarian revolt under Premier Imre Nagy.

1979 - The American embassy in Tehran, Iran was seized by militants and 90 Americans were taken hostage, and for most of them, began a period of 444 days in captivity.

1980 - Republican Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter to become the nation's 40th president.

1985 - To the shock and dismay of U.S. officials, Soviet defector Vitaly Yurchenko announced he was returning to the Soviet Union, charging he had been kidnapped by the CIA.

1991 - Ronald Reagan opened his presidential library in Simi Valley, California; attending were President George H.W. Bush and former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald R. Ford and Richard Nixon — the first-ever gathering of five past and present U.S. chief executives.

1995 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated.

2008 - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois was elected president over Sen. John McCain, becoming the nation's first African-American president.

2008 - California voters approved Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage, overturning a state Supreme Court decision that gave gay couples the right to wed just months earlier.

2020 - A day after the presidential election, victories in Michigan and Wisconsin left Joe Biden one battleground state short of winning the White House. President Donald Trump falsely claimed victory in several key states and called the election process “a major fraud on our nation.”

2021 - The Biden administration issued a rule requiring tens of millions of Americans who worked at companies with 100 or more employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or get tested for the virus weekly. (The Supreme Court rejected that rule in January 2022, finding that the administration had overstepped its authority.)

1911 - Nebraska and Cockeye State play to a 6-6 tie.

1916 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 3-0.

1922 - Syracuse defeats Nebraska 9-6.

2003 - Mark Messier (New York Rangers) scored two goals and moved into second place in career points. The goals were points 1850 and 1851 of his career.

2006 - Nebraska defeats #25 Missouri 34-20.

2009 - The New York Yankees defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win a record 27th World Series.
