1842 - Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois.

1856 - Democrat James Buchanan defeated Republican John C. Fremont and former President Millard Fillmore of the Whig Party to win the presidency.

1880 - James and John Ritty patented the first cash register in Dayton, Ohio.

1884 - Democrat Grover Cleveland defeated Republican James G. Blaine to win the presidency.

1922 - Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt.

1924 - Nellie T. Ross of Wyoming was elected the nation's first female governor, to serve out the term of her husband who had died in office.

1924 - President Calvin Coolidge (Republican) won re-election over Democrat John W. Davis and Progressive Robert M. La Follette.

1939 - The United States modified its neutrality stance in World War II to allow "cash and carry" purchases of arms by belligerents, a policy favoring Britain and France.

1942 - During World War II, Axis forces retreated from El Alamein in North Africa, a major victory for British forces.

1952 - Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected president, defeating Democrat Adlai Stevenson.

1956 - Russian troops attacked Budapest and crushed the Hungarian revolt under Premier Imre Nagy.

1979 - The American Embassy in Tehran, Iran was seized by militants and 90 Americans were taken hostage.

1980 - Republican Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter to become the nation's 40th president.

1985 - To the shock and dismay of U-S officials, Soviet defector Vitaly Yurchenko announced he was returning to the Soviet Union, charging he had been kidnapped by the CIA.

1991 - Ronald Reagan opened his presidential library in Simi Valley, California; attending were President George H.W. Bush and former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald R. Ford and Richard Nixon -- the first-ever gathering of five past and present U.S. chief executives.

1995 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a right-wing Israeli in Tel Aviv.

2008 - California voters approved Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage, overturning a state supreme court decision that gave gay couples the right to wed just months earlier.

2008 - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois defeated Arizona Sen. John McCain to become the 44th and first African-American president of the United States.

2014 - Riding a powerful wave of voter discontent, Republicans captured control of the Senate and tightened their grip on the House.

2015 - Justin Trudeau was sworn in as Canada’s new Liberal prime minister.

2019 - The Trump administration said it had formally notified the United Nations that the United States had begun the process of pulling out of the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

1916 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 3-0.

1922 - Syracuse defeated Nebraska 9-6.

2010 - Hall of Fame baseball manager Sparky Anderson died at age 76.

2017 - Northwestern defeated Nebraska 31-24 in overtime.
