1782 - The United States and Britain signed preliminary peace articles in Paris, ending the Revolutionary War. (The Treaty of Paris was signed in September 1783.)

1803 - Spain completed the process of ceding Louisiana to France, which had sold it to the United States.

1804 - Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase was tried for political bias. (He was acquitted by the U.S. Senate.)

1835 - Author Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri.

1874 - Winston Churchill was born.

1900 - Irish author Oscar Wilde died in Paris at age 46.

1940 - Actors Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married.

1962 - U Thant of Burma was elected secretary-general of the United Nations, succeeding the late Dag Hammarskjold.

1966 - Barbados became independent of Great Britain.

1974 - The fossilized remains of a female human ancestor named Lucy (after the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) were found in Ethiopia.

1981 - The United States and the Soviet Union opened negotiations in Geneva aimed at reducing nuclear weapons in Europe.

1982 - Michael Jackson's "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, was released by Epic Records.

1993 - The Brady Bill, requiring a five-day waiting period for handgun purchases, was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

1993 - Authorities in California arrested Richard Allen Davis, who confessed to abducting and killing 12 year-old Polly Klaas of Petaluma.

1995 - Bill Clinton became the first U.S. president to visit Northern Ireland.

1999 - The opening of a 135-nation trade gathering in Seattle was disrupted by at least 40,000 demonstrators, some of whom clashed with police.

2000 - Al Gore’s lawyers battled for his political survival in the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts; meanwhile, GOP lawmakers in Tallahassee moved to award the presidency to George W. Bush in case the courts did not by appointing their own slate of electors.

2004 - Ken Jennings ended his 74-game winning spree on the game show, "Jeopardy!".

2010 - Pentagon leaders called for scrapping the 17-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" ban after releasing a survey about the prospect of openly gay troops.

2010 - The Obama administration announced that all 197 airlines that flew to the U.S. had begun collecting names, genders and birth dates of passengers so the government could check them against terror watch lists before they boarded flights.

2013 - Paul Walker, 40, the star of the “Fast & Furious” movie series, died with his friend, Roger W. Rodas, who was at the wheel of a Porsche sports car that crashed and burned north of Los Angeles.

2016 - House Democrats reelected Nancy Pelosi as their leader.

2018 - George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died in Houston at age 94.

2020 - Two battleground states, Wisconsin and Arizona, certified their presidential election tallies in favor of Joe Biden, even as President Donald Trump’s legal team continued to dispute the results; Biden’s victory in Wisconsin was certified following a partial recount that only added to his 20,600-vote margin over Trump.

1893 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 20-18 to end the season at 3-2-1.

1899 - Grinnell defeats Nebraska 12-0, NU ends the season at 1-7-1.

1905 - Nebraska defeats Illinois 24-6 to close the season at 8-2.

1916 - Notre Dame defeats Nebraska 20-0; Huskers end the season at 6-2 overall and as Missouri Valley champions (3-1).

1922 - Nebraska defeats Notre Dame 14-6 to end the year at 7-1 overall and as Missouri Valley champions (5-0).

1933 - Nebraska defeats Oregon State 22-0 to end the year at 8-1 overall and as Big 6 champions (5-0).


1937 - Yale running back Clint Frank wins the Heisman Trophy.

1940 - #8 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 20-0 to win the Big 6 championship (5-0).

1946 - #4 UCLA defeats Nebraska 18-0; NU ends the season at 3-6 overall and in 3rd place in the Big 6 (3-2).

1951 - Miami (FL) defeats Nebraska 19-7 and ends the season at 2-8 overall and in 4th place in the Big 7 (2-4).


1954 - Wisconsin running back Alan Ameche wins the Heisman Trophy.

1959 - Joe Foss is named the first commissioner of the AFL.

1959 - LSU quarterback Billy Cannon is selected by the Los Angeles Rams with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1971 - ABC-TV aired "Brian's Song." The movie was about Chicago Bears' Brian Picolo and his friendship with Gale Sayers.

1976 - Pittsburgh running back Tony Dorsett wins the Heisman Trophy.

1991 - In China, the United States defeats Norway 2-1 to win the inaugural Women's World Cup soccer tournament.

1993 - The NFL awarded the league's 30th franchise to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

1996 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls became the 10th player in NBA history to score 25,000 career points.

2015 - Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers announces he will retire at the conclusion of the season.
