1782 - The United States and Britain signed preliminary peace articles in Paris, ending the Revolutionary War. (The Treaty of Paris was officially signed in September 1783.)

1803 - Spain completed the process of ceding Louisiana to France, which had sold it to the United States.

1804 - Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase was tried on charges of political bias. (He was acquitted by the U.S. Senate.)

1835 - Author Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri.

1874 - Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England.

1900 - Irish author Oscar Wilde died in Paris at age 46.

1936 - London’s famed Crystal Palace, constructed for the Great Exhibition of 1851, was destroyed in a fire.

1940 - Actors Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married. (The couple divorced in 1960.)

1960 - The last DeSoto was built by Chrysler, which had decided to retire the brand after 32 years.

1962 - U Thant of Burma was elected secretary-general of the United Nations, succeeding the late Dag Hammarskjold.

1966 - Barbados became independent of Great Britain.

1974 - The fossilized remains of a female human ancestor, later named "Lucy" (after the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"), were found in Ethiopia.

1981 - The United States and the Soviet Union opened negotiations in Geneva aimed at reducing nuclear weapons in Europe.

1982 - Michael Jackson's album "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, was released by Epic Records.

1993 - The Brady Bill, requiring a five-day waiting period for handgun purchases and background checks of prospective buyers, was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

1995 - President Bill Clinton became the first U.S. president to visit Northern Ireland.

1999 - The opening of a 135-nation trade gathering in Seattle was disrupted by at least 40,000 demonstrators, some of whom clashed with police.

2000 - Lawyers for Vice President Al Gore battled for his political survival in the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts; meanwhile, GOP lawmakers in Tallahassee moved to award the presidency to George W. Bush in case the courts did not by appointing their own slate of electors.

2004 - Ken Jennings ended his 74-game winning spree on the game show "Jeopardy!"

2010 - Pentagon leaders called for scrapping the 17-year-old "Don't ask, don't tell" ban after releasing a survey about the prospect of openly gay troops. (The policy was rescinded in 2011.)

2010 - The Obama administration announced that all 197 airlines that flew to the U.S. had begun collecting names, genders and birth dates of passengers so the government could check them against terror watch lists before they boarded flights.

2015 - Jury selection began in Baltimore in the trial of Officer William Porter, the first of six policemen to face charges in the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Black man who died of a severe spinal injury while in police custody. (All charges against Porter were dropped after a mistrial; three other officers were acquitted; all remaining charges were later dropped.)

2018 - George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died in Houston at age 94.

2018 - President Donald Trump, along with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, signed a revised North American trade pact at the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires.

1893 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 20-18 to end the season at 3-2-1.

1899 - Grinnell defeats Nebraska 12-0; NU ends the year at 1-7-1.

1905 - Nebraska defeats Illinois 24-6 to end the season at 8-2.

1916 - Notre Dame defeats Nebraska 20-0; NU ends the season at 6-2 but wins the Missouri Valley Conference title (3-1).

1922 - Nebraska defeats Notre Dame 14-6 to end the season at 7-1 and as Missouri Valley champions (5-0).

1933 - Nebraska defeats Oregon State 22-0 to end the year at 8-1 and Big 6 champions (5-0).


1937 - Yale running back Clint Frank wins the Heisman Trophy.

1940 - #8 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 20-0, winning the Big 6 title (5-0).

1946 - #4 UCLA defeats Nebraska 18-0; NU ends the season at 3-6 and in 3rd place in the Big 6 (3-2).


1948 - Baseball's Negro League disbands.

1951 - Miami (FL) defeats Nebraska 19-7 to end the year at 2-8 and in fourth place in the Big 7 (2-4).

1954 - Wisconsin fullback Alan Ameche wins the Heisman Trophy.

1956 - At age 21 years, 10 months, 3 weeks and 5 days old, Floyd Patterson becomes the youngest world heavyweight boxing champion and is also the first former Olympic gold medalist to win a heavyweight title.

1959 - The Los Angeles Rams select LSU's Billy Cannon with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1971 - ABC-TV aired "Brian's Song." The movie was about Chicago Bears' Brian Picolo and his friendship with Gale Sayers.

1976 - Pittsburgh running back Tony Dorsett wins the Heisman Trophy.

1991 - The United States defeats Norway 2-1 in Guangzhou, China to win the inaugural Women's World Cup soccer tournament.

1993 - The NFL officially awarded the league's 30th franchise to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

1996 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls became the 10th player in NBA history to score 25,000 career points.

2015 - Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers announces his plans to retire at the end of the season.
