1839 - The first Opium War between China and Britain broke out.

1868 - Republican Ulysses S. Grant was elected president over Democrat Horatio Seymour.

1896 - Republican William McKinley was elected president over Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

1903 - Panama proclaimed its independence from Colombia.

1908 - Republican William Howard Taft was elected president over Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

1911 - The Chevrolet Motor Car Co. was founded in Detroit by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. (The company was acquired by General Motors in 1918.)

1936 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected to a second term in a landslide over Republican Alfred M. "Alf" Landon.

1952 - Clarence Birdseye marketed the first frozen peas.

1957 - The Soviet Union sent the first animal, a dog named Laika, into space aboard Sputnik II. Laika died in orbit.

1962 - Wilt Chamberlain of the San Francisco Warriors scores 72 points against the Los Angeles Lakers, the fourth-highest single-game total in NBA history.

1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson soundly defeated Republican challenger Barry Goldwater to win a term in the White House in his own right.

1973 - BYU receiver Jay Miller sets an NCAA football single game record with 22 catches (for 263 yards) en route to a 56-21 victory over New Mexico at Cougar Stadium, Provo, Utah.

1979 - Five Communist Workers Party members were killed in a clash with heavily armed Ku Klux Klansmen and neo-Nazis during an anti-Klan protest in Greensboro, North Carolina.

1986 - A Lebanese magazine broke the story of U.S. arms sales to Iran, leading to the Iran-Contra affair.

1990 - TCU quarterback Matt Vogler completes 44 passes including 5 touchdowns for an NCAA football record 690 passing yards in a 56-35 loss to Houston at the Astrodome; Cougars quarterback David Klingler throws for 7 TDs.

1992 - Illinois Democrat Carol Moseley-Braun became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

1992 - Democrat Bill Clinton was elected the 42nd president of the United States, defeating incumbent President George H.W. Bush and Independent Ross Perot.

1994 - Susan Smith of Union, S.C., was arrested for drowning her two young sons, nine days after claiming the children had been abducted by a black man. (Smith is serving life in prison.)

1996 - Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers becomes the youngest player to make his NBA debut at age 18 years, 2 months, 11 days in a 91-85 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

1998 - Voters in Minnesota elected former professional wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura as their governor.

2004 - Hamid Karzai was declared the winner if Afghanistan's first presidential election.

2007 - Navy defeats Notre Dame 46-44 in triple overtime, snapping the Fighting Irish's NCAA-record winning streak over the Midshipmen at 43 games, dating back to 1963.

2009 - Maine residents narrowly voted down a same-sex marriage law.

2010 - President Barack Obama acknowledged that Democrats had taken “a shellacking” in midterm elections.

2010 - The Federal Reserve announced a plan to buy $600 billion in Treasury bonds over the next eight months in an attempt to boost lending and stimulate the economy.

2014 - Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Center opened for business, marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers and the nation.

2015 - Ohio voters rejected a ballot proposal that would have legalized both recreational and medical marijuana.

Sadly, I was a season ticket holder and at that first Timberwolves game in '89. Good training for the futility that Nebraska football fandom would bestow on me beginning in about 2002 or so...

They had tons of fans in the hump (the dome). set NBA records.
