1864 - A Colorado militia killed at least 150 peaceful Cheyenne Indians in the Sand Creek Massacre.

1929 - Navy Lt. Commander Richard E. Byrd and a crew of three became the first to fly over the South Pole.

1947 - The U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the partitioning of Palestine between Arabs and Jews; 33 members, including the United States, voted in favor of the resolution, 13 voted against while 10 abstained. (The plan, rejected by the Arabs, was never implemented.)

1952 - President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower kept his campaign promise to visit Korea to assess the conflict.

1961 - Enos the chimp was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft, which orbited Earth twice before returning.

1963 - President Lyndon B. Johnson named a commission headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren to investigate the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

1963 - The Beatles released their song "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in Britain.

1972 - The coin-operated video arcade game "Pong," created by Atari, made its debut at Andy Capp's Tavern in Sunnyvale, California.

1981 - Film star Natalie Wood drowned in a boating accident off Santa Catalina Island, California, at age 43.

1986 - Actor Cary Grant died at age 82 in Davenport, Cockeye.

1987 - A Korean Air 707 jetliner en route from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok was destroyed by a bomb planted by North Korean agents with the loss of all 115 people aboard.

1989 - In response to a growing pro-democracy movement in Czechoslovakia, the Communist-run parliament ended the party's 40-year monopoly on power.

1990 - The U.N. Security Council voted 12-2 to authorize military action if Iraq did not withdraw its troops from Kuwait and release all foreign hostages by Jan. 15, 1991.

1996 - A U.N. court sentenced Bosnian Serb army soldier Drazen Erdemovic to 10 years in prison for his role in the massacre of 1,200 Muslims - the first international war crimes sentence since World War II.

1999 - Protestant and Catholic adversaries formed a Northern Ireland government.

2000 - Bracing the public for more legal wrangling, Vice President Al Gore said in a series of TV interviews that he was prepared to contest the Florida presidential vote until “the middle of December.”

2001 - George Harrison of the Beatles died following a battle with cancer at age 58.

2016 - President-elect Donald Trump continued to fill out his Cabinet, choosing former Goldman Sachs executive Steven Mnuchin as secretary of the Treasury Department, Georgia Rep. Tom Price to oversee the nation’s health care system, and Elaine Chao, a former labor secretary and the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to lead the Department of Transportation.

2017 - “Today” host Matt Lauer was fired for what NBC called “inappropriate sexual behavior” with a colleague; a published report accused him of crude and habitual misconduct with women around the office.

1890 - The first Army-Navy football game was held, with Navy winning the contest 24-0 at West Point, New York.

1894 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 36-0.

1900 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 20-12; NU ends the season at 6-1-1.

1906 - Nebraska defeats Cincinnati 41-0 to end the season at 6-4.

1917 - Syracuse defeats Nebraska 10-9; NU finishes the year at 5-2 and is Missouri Valley champion (2-0).

1923 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 34-12 to finish at 4-2-2 and as champions of the Missouri Valley (3-0-2).

1928 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 8-0 to finish the year with a record of 7-1-1; the Huskers win the Big 6 championship in the first year of the league's existence with a conference-mark of 5-0.

1934 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 19-7; NU finishes at 6-3 overall and as Big 6 runner-up (4-1).

1941 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 7-6 to end the season at 4-5 and as Big 6 runner-up (3-2).

1947 - Oregon State defeats Nebraska 27-6; NU finishes the season at 2-7 and in fourth place in the Big 6 (2-3).


1960 - Navy running back Joe Bellino wins the Heisman Trophy.

1962 - Major league baseball decided to return to only one All-Star Game a year beginning in 1963.

1987 - Joe Montana (San Francisco 49ers) completed a record 22 consecutive passes.

1987 - Venice Glenn (San Diego Chargers) ran back an interception for 103 yards. It was an NFL record.

1991 - #11 Nebraska defeats #19 Oklahoma 19-14 to end the regular season as co-Big 8 champions (6-0-1).

1992 - Jerry Rice caught his 100th NFL touchdown pass.

1992 - Dennis Byrd (New York Jets) was paralyzed after a neck injury in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

1995 - Grant Fuhr (St. Louis Blues) became the 11th NHL goalie to win 300 games.

1996 - #4 Nebraska defeated #5 Colorado 17-12 to finish the regular season as Big 12 North champions (8-0).

2002 - Pierre Turgeon (Dallas Stars) played in his 1,100th NHL game.

2002 - #13 Colorado defeated Nebraska 28-13; NU finished the regular season in fourth place in the Big 12 North (3-5).

2013 - Cockeye defeated Nebraska 38-17; NU finishes the regular season as runner-up in the Big Ten Legends Division (5-3).

2019 - #19 Cockeye defeats Nebraska 27-24; Huskers end the season at 5-7 overall and 3-6 (5th place) in the Big Ten West.
