1520 - Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan passed through the South American strait which now bears his name to the Pacific Ocean.

1905 - Sinn Fein was founded in Dublin.

1919 - American-born Lady Astor became the first woman to take a seat on the British Parliament.

1925 - The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville made its debut on radio station WSM.

1942 - Almost 500 people died in the Coconut Grove nightclub fire in Boston.

1943 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Josef Stalin met in Tehran, Iran for their first meeting during World War II.

1958 - The African nation of Chad became an autonomous republic within the French community.

1964 - The U.S. spacecraft Mariner 4 was launched on the first successful mission to Mars.

1975 - President Gerald R. Ford nominated federal judge John Paul Stevens to the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated by William O. Douglas.

1979 - An Air New Zealand DC-10 en route to the South Pole crashed into a mountain in Antarctica, killing all 257 people aboard.

1990 - Margaret Thatcher resigned as prime minister of Great Britain; John Major took over.

1994 - Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was slain in a Wisconsin prison by a fellow inmate.

1995 - President Bill Clinton signed a bill ending the federal 55 mph speed limit.

2001 - Enron Corp., once the world's largest energy trader, collapsed after would-be rescuer Dynegy Inc. backed out of an $8.4 billion deal to take it over.

2010 - WikiLeaks began disclosing over 250,000 private cables written by U.S. diplomats, divulging candid comments from world leaders and detailing occasional U.S. pressure tactics aimed at hot spots in Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea.

2011 - Egyptians voted in the first parliamentary elections since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak; Islamist parties were the big winners.

2018 - Democrats overwhelmingly nominated Nancy Pelosi to become House speaker when Democrats took control of the House in January.

2019 - President Donald Trump paid a surprise Thanksgiving visit to Afghanistan, where he announced that the U.S. and the Taliban had been engaged in peace talks, and said he believed that the Taliban wanted a cease-fire. (The United States would sign a peace agreement with the Taliban in February 2020.)

1895 - The first automobile race took place, between Chicago and Waukegan, Illinois.

1895 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 6-0 to end the season at 6-3.

1896 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 6-0. NU ends the season at 6-3-1.

1901 - Nebraska defeats Haskell 18-10 to end the year at 6-2.

1907 - St. Louis defeats Nebraska 34-0, NU ends the year at 8-2 and co-champs of the Missouri Valley Conference (1-0).

1918 - Nebraska and Notre Dame played to a 0-0 tie.

1929 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 31-12 to finish the year at 4-1-3 and win the Big 6 Conference title (3-0-2).


1929 - Ernie Nevers (Chicago Cardinals) set an NFL record when he scored 40 points in a game. He scored six touchdowns and kicked four extra points.

1935 - Nebraska defeats Oregon State 26-20 to end the season at 6-2-1; NU also was the Big 6 champion (4-0-1).

1936 - #10 Nebraska defeats Oregon State 32-14 to end the year at 7-2 and winning the Big 6 (5-0). NU was ranked #9 in the final AP Poll.


1938 - TCU quarterback Davey O'Brien wins the Heisman Trophy.

1942 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 19-0 to end the year at 3-7 overall and in 3rd place in the Big 6 (3-2).

1948 - Dippy Evans (Chicago Bears) became the first NFL player to score two touchdowns on recovered fumbles in a game.

1961 - Ernie Davis of Syracuse University became the first African-American to be named winner of the Heisman Trophy.

1967 - UCLA quarterback Gary Beban wins the Heisman Trophy.

1969 - The New York Knicks set an NBA record when they won their 18th consecutive game.

1978 - Oklahoma running back Billy Sims wins the Heisman Trophy.

1979 - Billy Smith (New York Islanders) became the first goalie in NHL history to get credit for a goal. Smith was the last Islander to touch the puck before Rob Ramage (Colorado Rockies) put it into his own net.

1981 - Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant wins his 315th game to pass Amos Alonzo Stagg as college football's winningest coach.

1982 - Ron Sutter began his NHL career as a Philadelphia Flyer. With his start a record was set when 5 brothers all played in the NHL. His brothers were Brian (St. Louis), Darryl (Chicago), Brent (Islanders) and Duane (Islanders). Ron's twin Rich signed with Pittsburgh a year later to make it six Sutters brothers in the league at one time.

1987 - #5 Nebraska defeats Colorado 24-7 to finish as Big 8 runner-up (6-1).

1997 - #2 Nebraska defeats Colorado 27-24 to win the Big 12 North (8-0).


2002 - Michael Jordan (Washington Wizards) announced that he would retire for the third and final time at the end of the NBA season.

2003 - #25 Nebraska defeats Colorado 31-22 to finish in second place in the Big 12 North (5-3). It would be the final game coached by Frank Solich.

2008 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 40-31 to finish as co-Big 12 North champions (5-3). The game also featured Alex Henery's school-record 57-yard field goal.

2014 - Nebraska defeated Cockeye 37-34 in overtime to finish as runner-up in the Big Ten West (5-3). It would be the final game coached by Bo Pelini at Nebraska.


2015 - Tyson Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision in Duesseldorf, Germany, to end the Ukrainian’s nine-and-a-half-year reign as heavyweight champion and take his WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles.
