1701 - Astronomer Anders Celsius, inventor of the Celsius temperature scale, was born in Uppsala, Sweden.

1841 - Thirty-five Amistad survivors return to Africa.

1852 - Lord Byron's daughter Ada died. She had assisted Charles Babbage with his "analytical engine" and is credited with inventing computer language.

1895 - Alfred Nobel signed his last will, which set aside funds for the Nobel Prize.

1901 - The Army War College was established in Washington, D.C.

1910 - New York's Pennsylvania Station opened.

1924 - Macy's first Thanksgiving Day Parade -- billed as a "Christmas Parade" -- took place in New York City.

1942 - The French navy at Toulon scuttled its ships and submarines to keep them out of the hands of the Nazis.

1962 - The first Boeing 727 was rolled out at the company’s Renton Plant.

1970 - Pope Paul VI was attacked at the Manila Airport by a Bolivian painter disguised as a priest.

1973 - Gerald R. Ford was confirmed by the Senate to succeed Spiro T. Agnew as Vice President of the United States.

1978 - San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, a gay-rights activist, were shot to death inside City Hall by Dan White, a former supervisor.

2002 - U.N. specialists began a new round of weapons inspections in Iraq.

2003 - President George W. Bush secretly flew to Iraq to spend Thanksgiving with the troops.

2008 - Iraq's parliament approved a pact requiring all U.S. troops to be out of the country by Jan. 1, 2012.

2009 - Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced daughter Chelsea's engagement to longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky.

2010 - The State Department released a letter from its top lawyer to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, warning that an expected imminent release of classified cables would put “countless” lives at risk, threaten global counterterrorism operations and jeopardize U.S. relations with its allies.

2015 - A gunman attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing three people and injuring nine. (Suspect Robert Dear was sent to a psychiatric hospital after being deemed incompetent for trial.)

2019 - Two explosions, 13 hours apart, at a chemical plant in East Texas blew out windows and doors of nearby homes and prompted an evacuation order for more than 50,000 people; three plant workers sustained minor injuries.

1890 - Nebraska opens their inaugural football season with a 10-0 win over Omaha YMCA.

1902 - Nebraska defeats Northwestern 12-0 to end the season with a perfect 9-0 record.

1919 - Nebraska defeats Syracuse 3-0 to end the season at 3-3-2.

1924 - Nebraska defeats Oregon State 14-0, ending the year at 5-3 and as runner-up in the Missouri Valley Conference (3-1).

1930 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 10-9; NU ends the year at 4-3-2 and in fourth place in the Big 6 (2-2-1).

1937 - #11 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 3-0, ends the season at 6-1-2 and wins the Big 6 Conference championship (3-0-2).


1940 - Michigan running back Tom Harmon wins the Heisman Trophy.

1943 - Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 26-7; NU ends the year at 2-6 and in fourth place in the Big 6 (2-3).

1948 - Oregon State defeats Nebraska 28-12; NU ends the year at 2-8 and in fifth place in the Big 7 (2-4).


1956 - The Green Bay Packers select Paul Hornung of Notre Dame with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1960 - Gordie Howe (Detroit Red Wings) scored his 1,000th point, the first to ever do so.

1961 - Gordie Howe becomes the first player to appear in 1,000 NHL games.

1965 - The Atlanta Falcons select Tommy Nobis from Texas with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1966 - In one of the highest scoring games in NFL history, the Washington Redskins defeat the New York Giants 72-41.

1980 - Dave Williams (Chicago Bears) became the first player in NFL history to return a kick for touchdown in overtime.

1992 - #12 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 33-9.

1994 - Joe Montana of the Kansas City Chiefs became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 40,000 yards.

1997 - Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions moves into second place on the NFL's all-time career rushing list.

1998 - #14 Nebraska defeats Colorado 16-14 to finish as runner-up in the Big 12 North Division (5-3).

2009 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 28-20 to win the Big 12 North (6-2).


2013 - Tiger Woods is named the PGA Tour's Player of the Year for the 11th time.

2015 - #3 Cockeye defeats Nebraska 28-20, NU ends the season at 6-7 overall and in fourth place in the Big Ten West (3-5).

2016 - The Ottawa Redblacks upset the heavily favored Calgary Stampeders 39-33 in overtime to win the Grey Cup.
