1789 - The first national Thanksgiving Day in the United States was proclaimed by President George Washington.

1825 - The first college social fraternity, Kappa Alpha, was formed at Union College in Schenectady, New York.

1832 - Public streetcar service began in New York City.

1922 - Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon became the first to enter the tomb of King Tutankhamen since it was sealed in 1323 B.C.

1933 - A judge in New York ruled the James Joyce book “Ulysses” was not obscene and could be published in the United States.

1940 - The half million Jews of Warsaw, Poland, were forced by the Nazis to live within a walled ghetto.

1941 - U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull delivered a note to Japan’s ambassador to the United States, Kichisaburo Nomura , setting forth U.S. demands for “lasting and extensive peace throughout the Pacific area.” The same day, a Japanese naval task force consisting of six aircraft carriers left the Kuril Islands, headed toward Hawaii.

1942 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered nationwide gasoline rationing, beginning December 1.

1942 - "Casablanca," starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, had its world premiere at the Hollywood Theater in New York.

1943 - During World War II, the HMT Rohna, a British transport ship carrying American soldiers, was hit by a German missile off Algeria; 1,138 men were killed.

1949 - India adopted a constitution as a republic within the British Commonwealth.

1950 - China entered the Korean War.

1973 - President Richard Nixon's personal secretary, Rose Mary Woods, told a federal court that she'd accidentally caused part of the 18 1/2-minute gap in a key Watergate tape.

1975 - Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson, was found guilty of trying to assassinate President Gerald Ford.

1986 - President Ronald Reagan appointed a commission headed by former Senator John Tower to investigate his National Security Council staff in the wake of the Iran-Contra affair.

1992 - Britain announced that Queen Elizabeth II had volunteered to start paying taxes on her personal income, and would take her children off the public payroll.

1998 - Tony Blair became the first British prime minister to speak to the Irish parliament.

2000 - Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris certified George W. Bush the winner in the state's presidential election by 537 votes.

2009 - An investigation ordered by Ireland's government found that Roman Catholic Church leaders in Dublin had spent decades sheltering child-abusing priests from the law and that most fellow clerics turned a blind eye.

2010 - Nineteen-year-old Somali-born Mohamed Osman Mohamud was arrested by federal agents during a sting in Portland, Oregon, accused of planning to detonate van of explosives during Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

2010 - President Barack Obama received 12 stitches in his upper lip after taking an errant elbow during a pickup basketball game with family and friends visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday.

1891 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 22-0.

1896 - Nebraska and Cockeye play to a 0-0 tie.

1903 - Nebraska defeats Illinois 16-0 to end the season with a perfect 10-0 record.

1908 - Nebraska defeats Wabash 27-6.


1917 - The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded, replacing the National Hockey Association. The teams included were the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and Quebec Bulldogs. Frank Calder was elected as the first NHL president. He served from 1917 to 1943.

1925 - Nebraska defeats Notre Dame 17-0 to end the season with a 4-2-2 record.

1931 - Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 40-0; NU still won the Big 6 title with a 5-0 record.

1954 - Nebraska defeats Hawaii 50-0; finishes the regular season as Big 7 runner-up (4-2).


1958 - Maurice Richard (Montreal Canadiens) scored his 600th NHL career goal.

1960 - The new Minneapolis-St Paul based major league baseball team selects the nickname "Twins".

1963 - Navy quarterback Roger Staubach wins the Heisman Trophy.

1968 - USC running back O.J. Simpson wins the Heisman Trophy.

1969 - Oklahoma running back Steve Owens wins the Heisman Trophy.

1976 - #8 Oklahoma defeats #10 Nebraska 20-17; ends in fourth place in the Big 8 (4-3).

1982 - #3 Nebraska defeats #11 Oklahoma 28-24 to win the Big 8 championship (7-0).

1983 - #1 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 28-21 to win the Big 8 championship (7-0).


1984 - Guy Lafleur (Montreal Canadiens) announced he would retire after 14 years in the NHL.

1993 - #2 Nebraska defeats #16 Oklahoma 21-7 to win the Big 8 championship (7-0).

1995 - Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino sets a new NFL record with his 343rd career touchdown pass.

1996 - Major League Baseball owner approve interleague play, on a 26-4 vote.

1998 - Barry Sanders (Detroit Lions) became only the second running back in NFL history to run for more than 15,000 career yards.

1999 - Steve Yzerman scores his 600th career NHL goal.

1999 - #3 Nebraska defeats Colorado 33-30 in overtime to win the Big 12 North Division title (7-1).

2003 - Scott Stevens (New Jersey Devils) played in his 1,616th NHL game, breaking Larry Murphy's record for defensemen. Only three players had played more games than Stevens.

2004 - Colorado defeats Nebraska 26-20. NU ends the season with a 5-6 record and finished third in the Big 12 North (3-5), marking Nebraska's first losing season since 1961 and the Huskers missed a bowl game for the first time since 1968.

2007 - Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor, 24, was mortally wounded during a botched armed robbery at his home in Palmetto Bay, Florida. (Taylor died the next day.)

2010 - #16 Nebraska defeats Colorado 45-17 to win the Big 12 North Division championship (6-2).

2019 - Top-ranked Duke lost to Stephen F. Austin 85-83 for the Blue Devils first home loss to a non-conference opponent since 2000.
