1758 - The British captured Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) in the French and Indian Wars.

1783 - The British evacuated New York City, their last military position, after the Revolutionary War.

1841 - The slaves who seized the Amistad in 1839 freed by the Supreme Court. They had been defended by former president John Quincy Adams.

1947 - Movie executives blacklisted the "Hollywood Ten."

1961 - The USS Enterprise was commissioned; it was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and remains the longest naval vessel ever built at 1,123 feet.

1963 - The body of President John F. Kennedy was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery after a funeral procession through Washington; an estimated 1 million people lined the processional route.

1986 - The Iran-Contra scandal erupted as President Ronald Reagan and Attorney General Edwin Meese revealed that profits from secret arms sales to Iran had been diverted to Nicaraguan rebels.

1998 - Jiang Zemin became the first Chinese head of state to visit Japan since World War II.

1999 - Elian Gonzalez, a 5-year-old Cuban boy, was rescued by a pair of sport fishermen off the coast of Florida, setting off an international custody battle.

2001 - As the war in Afghanistan entered its eighth week, CIA officer Johnny "Mike" Spann was killed during a prison uprising in Mazar-e-Sharif, becoming America's first combat casualty of the conflict.

2002 - President George W. Bush signed into law legislation creating the Department of Homeland Security and named Tom Ridge as the first secretary.

2016 - Fidel Castro, who led his rebels to a victorious revolution n 1959, embraced Soviet-style communism and defied the power of 10 U.S. presidents during his half century of rule in Cuba, died at age 90.

1921 - The first play-by-play broadcast of a football game was aired in College Station, TX, via an amateur radio station. The game was between the University of Texas and Texas A&M in Austin.

1951 - The Cleveland Browns are penalized a record 209 yards against the Chicago Bears.

1965 - The first color broadcast of an NFL game aired on CBS. The Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Colts played to a 24-24 tie.

1971 - Auburn quarterback Pat Sullivan wins the Heisman Trophy.

1976 - O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills rushed for 273 yards in a game against the Detroit Lions.

1979 - Pat Summerall and John Madden broadcast a game together for the first time, a pairing that would last 22 years and became one of the most well-known partnerships in TV sports broadcasting history.

2002 - Pete Rose and baseball commissioner Bud Selig met secretly to discuss Rose's lifetime ban from baseball.

2018 - Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers sets an NFL single-game record, completing 25 consecutive passes in a 45-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals, breaking the previous record of 22 held by Mark Brunell and David Carr. Rivers also sets a record for best single-game completion percentage at 96.6%.
2019 - Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson becomes the first in NFL history to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,500 yards in his first two NFL seasons.

2020 - Women's basketball star Caitlin Clark makes her collegiate debut at the University of Cockeye with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists against Northern Cockeye.
